இ Gostan Parking

A friend commented on Bananaz's go astern *gostan* parking "Why you turn your whole head backwards while reversing your car. Why can't you use the side mirrors, that's wrong driving!". Oh really? For those who are taking 'L' driving lessons in the 70s behind the wheel of a black Morris Minor do not have the privilege of what we called the side mirror aka fender mirror, door mirror, wing mirror, or side-view mirror. Ma Mango is using the side mirror for reversing her car. Dunno about the rest of the baby boomers but Bananaz was taught by the driving instructor, to turn the shoulder mid way with head backwards looking through the rear windscreen while performing a reverse parking during those 'L' lessons and old habits die-hard. Those days side mirrors were not a common sight for cars.

Since on the subject of The Morris Minor would take this opportunity to share some adventures of Bananaz with his Papa's first car which is also a black Morris Minor 1000 with registration number plate P 5169. Two distinctive features that Bananaz would like to highlight as many may not have the opportunity to see this kind of 50s car anymore. First unique and outstanding part of a Morris Minor is the signal lights which is the retractable semaphores called trafficators about 7 inches in length mounted high up in between the front and back door frame. It will protrude out horizontally when the switch is operated by a lever in the panel and has a lighted bulb inside the trafficators to facilitate night driving. Modern terms we call them turn signals — formally called "directional indicators" and informally known as "blinkers", "indicators" or "flashers".

Trafficators ~ Pix courtesy of Wikipedia
The second feature if you will notice from the video clip or top picture, the Morris Minor has a split and raked windscreen with the panes of ordinary window glass which are flat compared to the modern panoramic or wrap-around windscreen with toughened tempered glass. Technological change over time with great invention, innovation and diffusion of technology.

Thanks to "musicandtoys" for the YouTube and as you can see @0.18 & 0.30 the protruding and retracting of the trafficator..real cool! However they were fragile and could be easily broken off and also a tendency to get stuck in the closed position.

Bananaz had the Morris Minor with an 'L' from the driving school for 3 months driving lessons and pass the test with 'take one'. What car did you drive for the 3 months 'L' lessons? Most of you may be luckier than Bananaz to get a SLK *Slick Little Kancil* or Daihatsu car. My dear sister had 'take four' to pass her driving test and at one of the tests, the JPJ tester drove her back coz she scared the hell out of him. So what's your driver's license story? Care to share the kopi-o drama?

used a kancil :) had to retake the "on the road" exam 2 times because I did not pay off the tester. Sigh.. the JPJ tester gave so many reasons to fail me.

suituapui said...

Wah...now I know. Isaac...kopi-o license. Muahahahaha!!!! Rear view mirrors not very accurate...but at least now they have sensors to make things easier. Not my old car though...so I also pusing whole body like you.

Connie said...

I use both the side mirrors and turning around and looking behind me to go in reverse. I passed the driving test the first time, but had to retake just the parallel parking part of the test when I got my license. It was interesting to see the turning signals like that. I've never seen that kind before.

yvonne said...

My dad was the first person to teach me driving. And I think my skill scared the sh*t out of him because he gave up after the first attempt. Err... I mixed up with the "go" and "stop" pedals, lol! Fortunately no accident. He sent me to the licensed teacher.

I opted for a Nissan Sunny instead. No SLK as I wanted to drive a BIG car - big dream for a little girl back then. I was taught to use the side mirror when doing a reversed parking, and have been using this method since then. Passed the test with 'take one' after belanja kopi-o to the tester *big grin*.

yvonne said...

As for Morris Minor, I used to refer this car as the "froggy" car. When I was young and my dad owned a mini minor, I always envy those ppl with morris minor.

Why?? Because mini car only has 2 doors and morris has 4!

[SK] said...

hmmm, i would say it really depends on how comfortable the driver is when he/she is "gostanning" the car.. some might just be very comfortable by looking into the mirrors, but still some would be more confident and feel more secure to really turn the head and see the real thing..

[SK] said...

oh really?? no side mirrors for old cars?? hmmm, interesting.. and i find it amusing with that signal lights on your Morris Minor!! hahaha, why has it a poke-out installation?? looks funny, maybe the body is too wide thus need that to stand out the signals?? hahahaha..

[SK] said...

oh, the car plate is P5169?? just one alphabet?? wow, then your dad's car must be the 5169th registered car in Penang!! that is cool yeah?? hmmm, have not ride any "froggy" or "beetle" or "tortoise" (or whatever you call it) car before.. i guess if you still keep that car, it could be more expensive than a BMW now~~ :)

Caroline said...

i failed big time in reversing! bang-ed two diff house gates dy!! LOL!!

Hayley said...

There's this reverse camera these days, no doubt it helps a little, but still used to look at the rear view mirror and side mirrors...

Yannie said...

Talking about driving test, it made me feel so shameful about myself for the very first time. I was a good student at school. I never failed in any small test nor big exam, but I failed my driving test, not 1, but 2. I passed only at 3rd time.

Yannie said...

First time, failed 'side parking', and second time failed 'naik bukit'. I felt so sad that time, as most of my friends, who took the test together with me, all passed.

Yannie said...

5 years later, I planned to get a car, I took a refreshment driving course again, because my then boy friend (now husband) scolded me stupid unintentionally when teaching me driving in his brand new proton saga. Thanks to all these bad experiences, I am now a good driver, I reckon.

I still cannot drive, despite sitting for the written test twice.

First time because I wanted to buy motorbike.

2nd time because the old L "mati" oredi and I wanted to learn to drive.

Then, accident happened and until now still phobia about thinking of driving a car myself. XD

Hahahaha...mines is Kancil too :P Take one for the parking test :P hohohoh...

Ya, i remember those "no side mirror one" by the way bro,was just talking to friends this morning over coffee, dulu, kita undang undang punya jam... we had to stick out our hands, slowly lambai lambai singalling slowing down, and circling our hands signaling turning left, stick out straight, means turning to the right and L shape hand sign means stop....

I heard now, want to learn driving, have to pay like RM800 + that call "包到完“ dulu wau punya jam, only RM250......aiyah how times flies,,,,,,,,,,

my time was a kancil car. But sad to say i'm not good in driving manual car. I failed during one of the parking test. Took another test (paid extra money) and finally managed to pass.

But then, if I really have a limo.
I should also have a chauffeur, right?

Thx for some background story - 2nd time pass but no kopi O money

lena said...

i thought that signal light could be a little difficult to spot. Mine was driving a datsun, if i'm not wrong. Me and my group of friends engaged to the same driving instructor and whenever we see holes on the road in front of us, we just not able to avoid that and went in straight to that and got him bouncing mad and he will say in cantonese, "dont know why you and your friends all also drive like that one ah!" he wasnt pleased at all!

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Isaac Tan இ Those 'pao' pass is so much easier looks like we are at their mercy.

suituapui இ Pusing the whole body is safer than looking from the side mirror as you can see people or sometimes kids behind the car. Would used both the side mirror and turn around nowadays.

Daisy இ Think the turn signal are more from British cars. Those days my Papa would 'shout' at us to duck so that he can see while reversing.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

yvonne இ Most new drivers would step on the wrong pedal. You dad's heart could have dropped, glad nothing happened. Nissan Sunny longer than SLK harder to do reverse leh. One take + kopi-o cant escape that. That's one of the reason I bought a Mini 1275 for safety coz of the two doors no need to worry my child and the back window is hooked on and not those winding type. Bananaz think very far ahead haha.

[SK] இ When we take our 'L' suppose to stretch out our right hand when turning right so the idea came from here and the engineer make the trafficators to 'replace' our hands I guess haha. Not sure if my Papa bought this as second hand at that time Bananaz a little boy then. When you lift up the rubber mat can see holes on the floor board and see the road while the car is moving. Most likely cant last till today as those days rust proof chemical was not invented yet.

Caroline இ You passed your 'L' but those bangs were after you passed. Did you brought down the gates haha. Yeah need some skills in reversing and a lot people dont do it well.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Hayley இ First time I went to Japan in 1984 the tour coach driver just look at the TV screen in dash board while reversing the coach. No need side mirror or turn his head out. Somehow so used to turning my head would do it this old way haha.

Sheoh Yan இ Lack of practise could be one of the reason. Take 3 is so much better than my sister's Take 4. Naik bukit is a 'killer' most would fail on this. You'll be a good driver.

Cloudia இ Yeah it should be in the museum.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

khengsiong இ Haha very common to have kopi lesen as we got no better choice to avoid all the unnecessary hassle. But its not 100% if you knocked down the pole or slipped at the bukit as there are eyes watching you.

wenn இ Agree always play safe than sorry used both methods.

lina இ Oh drama banyak in getting lesen. OK lah now lagi best got chauffeur to drive you around..haha.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Casendra இ Driving SLK or Datsun or Merc also same size parking lot definitely SLK got more room and less chance of mistake. Woh like piece of cake no kopi-o lesen huh? haha

eugene இ How many would continue lambai lambai after dapat lesen? Think zero haha. Inflasi bro dulu kopi-o only 20sen now 80sen.

mNhL இ Most people fail coz lack of practice as we were given only certain limited hours. OK what to pass at Take 2. Kancil seems to be very popular coz of lower fuel consumption the Driving School wanna save cost.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

bluedreamer இ You have not taken your driving test yet still under age? Your time will come.

London Caller இ How nice chauffeur driven.

Small Kucing இ tQ template just changed not too long.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

HappySurfer இ My sister dont blog and moreover the whole kampung knew she had Take 4 and her drama haha. She is good with motorbike.

MRC இ You are lucky no 'pao' also can pass at Take 2.

lena இ Datsun slightly longer. Oh cheeky lady drivers wanna make life havoc for the instructor haha.

jam said...

Having side mirrors or not, I will still turn my head backward because this gives you a better view whether or not another car is crossing behind yours. And I am not a baby boomer, haha!

Got too excited or played too hard?

Lrong Lim said...

The Morris Minor looks so good... those were the days, as they always say...

One said...

I thought it is necessary to turn the head so as NOT to miss the blind spot.

When I took the driving test, the JPJ guy fell soundly asleep next to me. He only worked up when I reached the destination. I was gladly surprised that he said 'Bagus'.

Autumn Belle said...

Seeing the Morris Minor, I remember my dad's Volkswagon. I miss those triangular side mirrors that send gushes of cool air onto our faces but make a mess out of my mom's hairdo. I love the makan angin trips but the nightmare began when the battery started to conked off and we girls have to help out to push the car. Yeah, a happy family that shares the ups and downs.

Anonymous said...

I learned how to drive when I was 14 years old on my grandfathers farm in Texas. There were no other cars around, so all I could damage was his barn and a few chickens :-)

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

jam இ Better use both more safer then. Your driving instructor could have been a babyboomer who taught you the old school of reverse parking haha.

ladyviral இ Yeah mirrors not 100% trust worthy as my cousin banged an old lady while reversing his car lucky no serious injury. Local made ferrari? SLKancil or proton haha.

Tekkaus இ Play safe have both. That's even worst than kopi lesen you have been offering the JPJ tester kopi-o in your house haha.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ Good life with Ah Mat can sleep in the car, read latest news in the car.

Lrong இ Those were the days only black colored cars until the Japanese cars colored the streets.

One இ Wow sleeping on the job..my JPJ tester dont know whether want to trap up keep saying hurried up go faster but I ignored him. Yup now its a majority win, must turn the head while reversing cant depend too much on side mirrors.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Autumn Belle இ VW is also another classic car as a kid were quite amased that the engine is behind the boot and runs of air cool instead of water cool without the water radiator. Oh yeah forgot to highlight this special triangle side windows to get extra wind. Those were the pushing days haha.

T.O. Geezer இ Did you kill any chickens! You horrible under aged teenage murderer hahaha.
hahaha.

my 3 mirrors(rear & side) do a great job while reversing backwards.

but when gostaning sideways, it's still necessary to turn my head and look to ensure nothing was in the lanes beside my car.

Life Ramblings இ Wow no kopi-o and you could get away with Take One. Yes might as well use all that are provided in the car.

bengbeng இ Find that pusing the head is best option but side mirror add extra assistance.

Pete இ Daihatsu Charade is a good car. So pice of cake no prob in the test.

EastCoastLife இ Yes heard of lots of stories about the confessions of a driving instructor majority chee ko pek. Got chauffeur driven is a better option.

foongpc இ Right, use all things available to avoid any accident. Like my sister loh masuk longkang during the test.

Ghostynana said...

With a big car, it is hard to drive with 'turning head' method. Can't see small car.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Alice Law இ Majority are using the SLK for driving lessons only Bananaz used the Morris Minor. Wow system all go green for you. Did you hacked into the traffic lights to make them go green? haha. Yup worst challenge 'L' drivers fear most is the slope test.

Ghostynana இ Better to use all the gadgets given, side mirrors, sensors and rear reflector etc. Lots of reports children or wife or husband got knocked down by drivers during the gostan.
