Yesterday (05April2015) marked the official day for celebrating QingMing festival, one of the Four Major Traditional Chinese Festivals, observed by the Chinese community of the Daoist/Buddhist faith. Phrases (in Cantonese) like ‘Where and when you gonna ‘haang Qing行清’ ? lit. *'walk Qing' are pretty common these two weeks. What is this Qing all about?

清明节 QingMing Jie lit. translated as ‘clear’ (Qing) & ‘bright’ (Ming) festival or tomb sweeping day which usually falls on 4 - 5 April each year, celebrated either 10 days before or 10 days after the official QingMing day.

This festival originated in the 7th century BC, started by an accidental tragedy set upon by the Duke Wen (pinyin: 晋文公) of Jin himself who was so overwhelmed with grief of his lost friend and subject Jie Zitui (pinyin: 介之推) in a forest fire. The Duke created the Hanshi Festival (pinyin: 寒食节 or Cold Food day) to commemorate the loyalty of his subject Jie Zhitui. Another version of QingMing Festival involved the Tang Emperor, Xuanzong in 732 who was well known for his frugality as not to indulge in extravagant ceremonies in Tomb Sweeping Day or Ancestors Worship Day. Gradually over the years the practice was adopted by the masses throughout different eras and eventually combination of both traditions, the Hanshi and Tomb Sweeping Day into the QingMing Festival and kept as a one-day festival.

Across the globe, they commemorate their ancestors by sprucing up the graveyard, sweeping the tombs, removing weeds, burning incense and paper money including the high-tech paper stuff like mobile phone, tablet etc. The Chinese society places great emphasis towards filial piety and has high regards of remembering its roots. In Chinese mythology there is this 三魂七魄 *pinyin: sān hún qī pò* ~ three immortal souls and seven mortal forms. Perhaps another great opportunity for a future post on sānhúnqīpò? Setback is, as a Bananaz (who cannot read and write Chinese), the ever loving friendly dumb professor Mr Google is not able to provide a clear translation on the seven mortal forms. It may take awhile to get the right source and translation. Coming back to the three immortal souls ~ when someone dies, the 1st soul goes to meet Yanluowang 閻羅王, the god of death and the ruler of Hell who is also the judge who passes judgment on all the dead, the 2nd soul goes to the the grave and the 3rd soul goes to the ancestral pedestal/tablet (pinyin:神主牌 shénzhǔpái) placed at the ancestor’s hall, house or temple. Most importantly regardless of wherever the soul is, one thing for sure QingMing is able to enhance the togetherness of the entire family members as an outing at the cemetery year after year.

Changes happening in China..A new high-tech way of inscribing QR code onto the Tombstone head, a picture paints a thousand words...!!!Anyway in this modern era most memorial parks are pretty well organised and orderly, practically sweeping of tombs are kept to the minimal as they are well maintained.

Online services are available too through internet memorial services for QingMing catering mainly for those who are too busy with work or staying too far away from home. Quite strange to hear people whining about the long traffic jam when going to cemetery for QingMing as it is only once in a year affair but seldom hear complains of traffic jam or long queues at shopping cash counters every week or months. Life is like that?

Heard quite a lot of the good, bad & ugly of this popular 'Everyone Can..' airline. Finally Bananaz's very first time on board an 'AAX' flight for a 5 days due diligence trip. The last and my best holiday trip was Egypt, a couple of years ago. So far so good nothing much to complain about this no-frills aircraft. ETD/ETA was on time, no hiccups, a pleasant journey all the way to Pudong, Shanghai. Please do not have high expectation of picturesque views or food as they are not in my area.

Time and tide waits for no <strike>man</strike> Bananaz. Gosh time flies. Tempus fugit with just a blink of an eye and half a year has gone by already since his last CNY post. An old Chinese idiom that stresses the value of time by the inch and it goes like this : ~ '一寸光陰一寸金,寸金難買寸光陰' *yī cùn guāng yīn yī cùn jīn, cùn jīn nán mǎi cùn guāng yīn* "An inch of time is worth an inch of gold; yet you can't buy an inch of time with an inch of gold." *Guāng yīn* 光陰 refers to the sun's shadow which is equivalent to time, lit. An interval of time is worth an ounce of gold, money cannot buy you time. Time is precious and must be treasured.

Why*Ask*Why time is being measured by units of length in olden China? The answer lies in the most ancient time-measuring instrument used which consists of two parts, the gnomon-and-ruler *guibiao* 圭表. The gnomon (pronounced 'noh-mon') *biǎo* 表 is the post or stone pillar standing upright on the ground to cast a shadow on the marked tablet called the ruler *guī* 圭. Since time can be measured by the length of the shadow, thus to describe the duration of time with "inch" simply sounds logical.

"In the nick of time" is an English idiom for 'at the last possible moment' where a nick was a mark on a stick which was used in the past to measure time. Ancient Chinese would use 'in the inch of time' and in school we learned about seconds and hours. In this modern era the younger generation got a cool way of telling time, saying 'see you in a bit'? Any idea what to expect in years to come for the next new generation to tell time?இ Baŋäŋaz இhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03759912732442771311noreply@blogger.com52tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-659054575044347529.post-58516464739264659212014-01-19T23:42:00.000+08:002014-01-21T23:19:52.552+08:00இ Horse Up 馬上

Time not only slithers time just flies. The 'Snake' would be hissing goodbye pretty soon to make way for the Horse. Bananaz wanna apologies for MIA over couple of months been busy and hectic with overseas trips. The coming Horse Year will be a very special and unique year. Based on the lunar calendar, the year of Horse will commence on 31 January 2014 and ends on 18 February 2015. So this year we will have 2 occurrence of the first solar term or 立春 *lichun* (beginning of spring) within a year which is on 4 February 2014 and 4 February 2015. This makes the Year of the Horse a 'double spring year' 双春年 *shuāng chūn nián* plus a 閏月*rùn yuè* ie a leap 9th lunar month in this year. The old folks believe this is a good omen especially for wedding ceremony and giving birth.
The next double spring year will be in the year of Rooster in 2017.
We all know most Chinese words are based on pictograph, see how the word evolved gradually comparing the top pixz with the four legs and tail and a nice mane on the head. However the traditional word for horse '馬' *mǎ* was further simplified to '马' *mǎ*.
For this Horse Year the most popular idiom which would be overly mentioned is 馬到成功 *mǎ dào chéng gōng* lit. 'horse arrives, succeed' (meaning: to win instant success). For more idioms to use during this coming CNY can refer to last year's idioms which can still be applicable other than those snakey idioms.
Two men struck up a conversation in a pub and one of them kept complaining of family problems with 同父異母 *tóng fù yì mǔ* 'same father but different mothers'. Finally the other man said: "You think you have family problems? Listen to my situation". "A few years ago, I met a young widow with a grown-up daughter, we got married and I got myself a step-daughter. Later, my father married my step-daughter. That made my step-daughter my step-mother and my father became my step-son. Also, my wife became mother-in-law of her father-in-law."

"Much later the daughter of my wife, my step-mother had a son. This boy was my half brother because he was my father's son. But he was also the son of my wife's daughter which made him my wife's grandson. That made me the grandfather of my half brother."

"This was nothing until my wife and I had a son. Now the half sister of my son, my step-mother is also the Grandmother. That makes my father, the brother-in-law of my child, whose step-sister is my father's wife, I am my step-mother's brother-in-law, my wife is her own child's aunt, my son is my father's nephew and I am my OWN GRANDFATHER!"

It was a pleasant Sunday morning, so nice to 𨅝檯腳 *jaang3 toi4 goek3* 'stretch table leg' 'Cantonese: lit. stretch one's legs over the dining table legs' with Mango enjoying a simple dimsum breakfast. We noticed a family of four sitting across the next table having similarity in their facial features. Out of curiosity we 'played' Sherlock Holmes in guessing their relationship. Bingo! When the kid uttered two words, he solved the mystery for us by just calling out 叔公 *shūgōng* to the guy wearing the checked shirt. On the boy's right is his father and the older man on the far left is his grandfather and the guy at the center with checked shirt whom the kid called out as 叔公 *shūgōng* is his grandfather's younger brother aka Great Uncle.

Excerpt from Wikipedia: The Chinese kinship system (traditional Chinese: 親屬系統; pinyin: qīn shǔ xì tǒng) is classified as a Sudanese kinship system (also referred to as the "Descriptive system") used to define family. Identified by Lewis Henry Morgan in his 1871 work Systems of Consanguinity and Affinity of the Human Family, the Sudanese system is one of the six major kinship systems together with Eskimo, Hawaiian, Iroquois, Crow, and Omaha. The Sudanese kinship system (and hence the Chinese kinship system), is the most complicated of all kinship systems. It maintains a separate designation for almost every one of ego's kin based on their generation, their lineage, their relative age, and their gender.

In the Chinese kinship system:
Maternal and paternal lineages are distinguished. For example, a mother's brother and a father's brother have different terms.
The relative age of a sibling relation is considered. For example, a father's younger brother has a different terminology than his older brother.

Bananaz Paternal lineages:
伯 *bó* dad's elder brother [paternal elder uncle]
叔 *shū* dad's younger brother [paternal younger uncle]
姑 *gū* dad's elder or younger sister [paternal aunt]
堂 *táng* dad's brothers' children (sons & daughters) [paternal cousins]

Bananaz Maternal lineages:
舅 *jiù* mom's elder or younger brother [maternal uncle]
姨 *yí* mom's elder or younger sister [maternal aunt]
表 *biǎo* mom's brother or sister's children (no seniority) [maternal cousins]

The above may be very confusing and would better stop here for the time being if not it could be stretched to a mile long and that would be even more complicated. For easier understanding the surname of each individual and age factor in terms of seniority from the paternal lineage would determine a different terminology where else for the maternal lineage surname, age and seniority does not apply.
The first company offered: "From cradle to grave" but the second was better: "From womb to tomb." Bananaz was just about to take this when a third company came up with the ultimate offer: "From erection to resurrection!" Here goes the three presentations:

The first presenter 'From cradle to grave' said, "When one of our insured died suddenly on Monday, we got the news that evening and were able to process the claim for the wife and had mailed a cheque on Wednesday evening".

The second presenter 'From womb to tomb' said, "We are better, when one of our insured died without warning on Monday, we learned of it in 2 hours and were able to hand-deliver a cheque the very same evening itself".

The last presenter 'From erection to resurrection' said, "That's nothing! You guys are missing the big picture and most certainly 未见过大蛇屙屎 *pinyin* "wèi jiàn guò dà shé ēshǐ"; Cantonese:"mei6 cang4 gin3 gwo1 daai6 se4 o1 si2" [lit. never seen a big snake defecate before] Our office is on the 20th floor of the Twins Tower. One of our insured who was cleaning a window on the 85th floor, slipped and fell. We handed him his cheque as he passed our floor".

Of course the above presentation or rather a joke may be exaggerated but hopefully may bring home a point to explain this Chinese idiom 未见过大蛇屙屎 *pinyin* "wèi jiàn guò dà shé ēshǐ" [never seen a big snake defecate before]. WhyAskWhy Bananaz does not have the foggiest (not blaming the recent haze) idea how on earth this Chinese idiom of snake poop came into being. Guess the answer is already there we merely have to read between the lines (anyone can please assist). Honestly who have actually seen a live big snake defecate before? None? Simply put, it means that if we have not seen or know about it, does not mean that it does not exists. One must look at life in a wider perspective and not a knowledge barrier over a myopic view. More than often people would use this idiom when ever someone has a lack of knowledge of not knowing the bigger picture or current situation. When do we invite the 'snakey shit' to slam at our face? When someone is trying to be smart alec for example not aware that it's possible to run a mile in less than 4 minutes or building a 30 story hotel in 360 hours, who then uttered 'its impossible'. Then better watch out for this snakey shit idiom 未见过大蛇屙屎 *pinyin* "wèi jiàn guò dà shé ēshǐ" [never seen a big snake defecate before] to roll over the face.

Seeing is believing in just 15 days..

This idiom 未见过大蛇屙屎 *pinyin* "wèi jiàn guò dà shé ēshǐ" [never seen a big snake defecate before] also serves as a reminder to be humble at all times as life is always in a flux and a never ending learning process with no proven record of anyone known as Ms/Mr. KnowAll.இ Baŋäŋaz இhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03759912732442771311noreply@blogger.com69tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-659054575044347529.post-12565791388923206652013-06-27T00:11:00.000+08:002013-06-27T00:13:51.340+08:00இ 天下第一 No.1Human(e) Race..
[A few years ago at the Seattle Special Olympics, nice contestants all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with relish to run the race to finish and win. All that is except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry.
They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back..every one of them. One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story.]

According to snopes.com this story is partly true. This incident happened in a 1976 track and field event held in Spokane, Washington where one contestant did take a tumble and one or two of the other athletes turned back to help the fallen one not everyone in the event. It would be most ideal to be overwhelmed with compassion to turn back without thinking of going for gold in favour of helping a fallen competitor. Obviously in this real world, life is never kind and not so rosy because majority would be doing their damnedest to aim for Number One be it sports, finances, games etc.
Even way back in ancient China where the Swordsman would fight their very best to take on any challenges no matter what it takes, by hook or by crook to be 天下第一劍 [pinyin]:tiān xià dì yī jiàn. 'sky below number one sword' lit. *sky* represents the sky above and *below* for earth, the Chinese way of describing 'World' connecting 'sky+below'. We can only internalise and relate the sword wielding movies of the olden days with a pinch of salt on how genuine it was to go back in time with those men slinging their swords over their shoulders roaming the streets in search of fame and power. With the sophisticated computer graphics software, its unbelievable to see the sword penetrating through the body which looked so real. Unlike those black & white movies shown in the yesteryears of 60's the puzzled and confused Bananaz will often shoot difficult questions to his poor helpless mama. Eg ~ "How come the sword goes under that bad guy's arm pit who shouted loud then can die one?"& "Why after slashing the men, the sword got no blood on it one?"
WhyAskWhy over the years the curious Bananaz, a die-hard fan of swordsman/martial arts movies often baffles over the plot where most filmmakers have something in common. Its just a trivial observation, hopefully the nosey Bananaz is able to stay out of trouble as curiosity killed the cat.
The REVENGE factor of 'an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth' inspires the script writers. More than often its the fighting and killing one another to get hold of the martial arts manual to achieve invincible power or fighting over a reputable heavenly sword or dragon sabre to be crowned the indisputable 天下第一劍 [pinyin]: tiān xià dì yī jiàn 'World Number One Sword'.இ Baŋäŋaz இhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03759912732442771311noreply@blogger.com54tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-659054575044347529.post-76151607300609331022013-06-11T12:26:00.002+08:002013-06-11T15:01:52.332+08:00இ Get Down?Get Down or Get Out?

In the above Humorous Speech Contest, Marianna Pascal, a renowned writer and trainer on communication skills, presented her speech with great enthusiaism and clarity regarding our local varieties of English or rather Chinglish aka Manglish. To the language experts they may have thorns pricking their ear drums when words like 'what lah you' or 'where got' wriggles through their ears. Some how for those seasoned speakers/listeners of Chinglish/Manglish it would be the least disturbing. Just to touch on one point from the video where most Chinese would agree our mom & dad said this umpteenth times since the day we were born ~ 下車 xià chē *pinyin* lit. 'down car' a direct translation for 'get out of the car'. The obvious opposite is上車 shàng chē *pinyin* lit. 'up car' but its very rare to hear 'get up the car' in Chinglish. 上 shàng *up*/下xià *down* were embedded in our thick skull and over the years saying 'get down the car' in English is second nature.

What crosses your mind when you pick up your Shanghai friend/business associate at the airport who has limited vocabulary of English gets into your car, fastened the safety belt and ready to go and then uttered 'open car' and later on the highway raises his voice with 'kill car'?

開車 kāi chē 'open car' lit. is operate/drive/start a vehicle and not as what you imagine spanners dismantling the car. There is no connection to an act of murder with 殺車 sounds like 剎車 *tQ to Kian Fai Koh & SK* shā chē *pinyin* 'kill car' but to step on the brakes during any emergency. Of course we cannot simply apply a direct translation word for word or homophones but merely used them jokingly like that also can lah.

Interestingly some Chinese words such as 'Kiasu' and 'Kowtow' are borrowed words and accepted in most English Dictionaries .

Kiasu: is a Hokkien word literally means 'fear of losing' and in pinyin 怕输 *pà shū* where 怕pà means fear/afraid and 输shū means lose.
It was a great pleasure & pressure at the recent Bloggers Gathering for the very first time with Isaac, Simple Person , SK, Small Kucing, Twilight Man & Suituapui (couple of times already) as most of them were 'complaining' about seeing cobwebs in Bananaz's blog. So sorry folks Bananaz been MIA for quite some time since CNY. Bananaz's blog may be cobwebbed but definitely not abandoned. Surely and slowly will be back pretty soon to beat Twilight Man (TM) before he makes his drastic move. Here is what TM commented ~ "Oh dear, this blog has full of cobwebs in 4 corners! Spiderman wasn't here, was he??Gosh! OMG!!! What is this sticky green slime on the floor in this blog!! Oh no, it is green moss on the floor with lots of fungus and maggots. Help!!!I will be back tomorrow with some detergent and insecticide sprays too."

BTW Bananaz googled and discovered some spinning information about spider web vz cobweb. The meanings are identical with little or no difference between them as both Spider web and Cobweb refer to the silken threads spun by a spider. The main difference is that, spiders do not live in cobwebs which are no longer in use by the spider that made it. This gives them their thick, gray appearance, dusty and unorganized strands such as those seen in haunted houses. It is believed that the word "cobweb" originates from the Middle English word "coppe" meaning spider, and over the years the word was slurred to become cobweb. In contrast, when you see beautifully designed webs in trees and gardens, this is a spider web which is still in use i.e. clean.

The Water Snake slithers in un-officially after midnight on 04Feb2013 according to the solar calendar referred to as Lìchūn立春 *pinyin*. Traditionally Lìchūn or Laap Chun in Cantonese signifies the beginning of spring in East Asian cultures with special village events, worship and offerings to the gods and ceremonies for a blissful and prosperous new year. It marks the beginning of another cycle for being the very first day of spring when the sun is exactly at the celestial longitude of 315 ° which is divided into 24 solar terms in a year. However the Chinese New Year which is based on a lunisolar calendar often referred to as the "Lunar New Year" calendar incorporates both sun and moon (yin and yang combined ) cycle elements falls on 10Feb2013 in the Year of the 蛇 Snake.

We will be ushering in the Chinese New Year pretty soon and here is a special mention to Autumn Belle who sparked this entry with her comment in Dec2012 and it goes like this [P/S: hope you'll do a post about auspicious words to say for CNY for us bananas to learn and show off during the CNY season]. For fellow bananaz like me hope this few idioms can assist you to over come some of the challenges in wishing friends and relatives with nice four little words or so called favourable Chinese idioms. Hope the translation is in order and would appreciate the help from those Chinese educated readers to point out any mistakes or adding in more idioms, your feedbacks are most welcome. Bananaz was so embarrassed when a lady with a videocam zoomed right at my face requesting for a nice four little words in Chinese during a CNY dinner gathering as nothing could leave the lips as Bananaz was dumbfounded.
How many of us really take an interest in the tires or tyres we put on our car? Tyres can seem awfully technical (how many of us know our tyre size or minimum speed rating?). Who has the time to get educated on a new tyre purchase but to depend on our local tyre store or auto dealer for good advice? Well, we’d all agree with the old saying that “an informed consumer is a good consumer”. Would it not be better if you know what questions to ask after a little research? Most likely you can get a much better tyre for your needs, dramatically improve your performance and driving satisfaction, save you money and might even save your life. You do not need to take such high risk scaling treacherous mountains in snowy condition seeking answers, search no more get answers from AutoSquad 'All About Tires' & TireRack.
In about a week's time for those celebrating the forth coming Chinese *water snake* New Year would be in a mad rush preparing for balik kampung (return to village/hometown). Mass exodus from the cities for home during this festive season would expect heavy flow of traffic on all highways. REMINDER: Presume your motor vehicle has been serviced and in tip top condition if not do it ASAP. Not forgetting tyres are the backbone of a car and not to be neglected. Hopefully the videos below can be of great help to clear your doubts on managing your own tyres.
When to Replace Tyre?
If the tread depth falls below 2/32" or 2.3mm its high time for a replacement of new tyre (s).

Over the years we have been using this word tyre or 'tayar' (in Malay) so often think there is no surprise many may not remember or know what it is called in Chinese? Even my late papa would say, 'tayar pump chat' lit. its in English for tyre puncture. Bananaz rarely hear the Mandarin word for tyre until cross checked with sweetie Mango on the actual term in Mandarin *pinyin* (are you ready?) tada.. its 輪胎 lún tāi.

Tyre experts have demonstrated and proven on the safety of placing new or least worn tyres at the back axle instead of front for better grip when cornering, which we have not been doing it right over the past decades. Not all tyre store owners or auto dealers are aware of this latest research.
'people have 3 urgency'* and heading straight to the toilet in a jiffy. Instead of saying 'excuse me' the message was loud and clear enough for us to make way for the 100m sprinter to dash through. Living in a home where Mandarin and Chinese dialects monopolized all communication with hardly any English, Bananaz will only have to silently adapt with open ears. Knowing pretty well *人有三急 rén yǒu sān jí : lit. 'people have 3 urgency'* means the same as to answer the call of nature. That's cool so we have in total two kinds of urgency either a big or small call, now what about the third urgency then? At that tender age Bananaz could be too naive to question further or maybe he did ask but in vain.

This same idiom re-surfaced at college while Bananaz was waiting impatiently, mumbling and grumbling at the dining table as patience was rapidly wearing out. Just about to switch into angry mode one of my buddies commented: "Hey! Hungry is not stated in the idiom of *人有三急 rén yǒu sān jí : lit. 'people have 3 urgency*, let me tell you what are the threes". AHA Bingo! Bananaz was jumping in joy to have found the 3rd urgency after a lapse of time. Unconsciously the hunger instantly switched to jubilation mode. Eureka! here is the answer: 1. Urinate 2. Defecate 3. Sexual.
However not quite as yet still not the correct or complete answer for the idiom until Bananaz googled recently. Imagine learning Chinese the hearsay way all through out life from a little boy to adolescence until adult to get to the real meaning of this idiom. Learning is never ending.

What is so URGENT about this idiom * People Have 3 Urgency人有三急 rén yǒu sān jí * :
[ 1 ]. 内急 nèi jí lit. 'internal urgency' consist of urinate and defecate.
[ 2 ]. 性急 xìng jí lit. 'sexual urgency'.
[ 3 ]. 心急 xīn jí lit. 'heart urgency' ie impatient / hurried.
Another close example of 心急 xīnjí would apply to an impatient/anxious husband pacing to and fro outside the hospital ward while his wife is delivering their first baby. Strange enough this name 'Ah Long' has been accepted en masse by a wide variety of ethnic groups in Malaysia. WhyAskWhy on the origin of this notorious name for money lender aka Loan Shark come into existence? Hearsay the name originated from Hong Kong where those days the person who loans out money are called Chettiars, who love piercing their ears and wearing big earring.

As years go by the hole at the ear lobe stretches bigger and bigger. The same effect would apply to the loan that they give out as most borrowers are unable to repay the loan when the compounded loan amount gets bigger and bigger, just like the ear piercing hole, hence the Cantonese called them "Dai Yee Long"大耳窿 daai6 ji5 lung1 literally *Big Ear Hole* a colloquial term for illegal loan shark better known as Ah Long or Along in Malaysia and Singapore.

It is very common for Chinese to replace the middle name with "Ah", so as to be more friendly or closeness? Maybe this should trigger Bananaz to post about in future. Come to think about it all my siblings are of no exception where their last name is after the word "Ah". Some examples will be like 'Ah Soon Fast Food' or 'Ah Fatt Noodles'. Therefore it is not surprising for 'Dai Yee Long' to become Ah Long *啊窿*.
Ah Longs are one of the worst in graffiti with zero skills in spray paint on the walls of the house or property of defaulters. Their only best art is to paint "O$P$" meaning "owe money, pay money". Bananaz is not elaborating on their threat of violence suffered by the borrowers or their family members. What is the difference between a Bank and Ah Long?
Some said no difference at all, except that loan sharks are unlicensed and can be imprisoned for what they do, whereas banks can do the same legally. Banks would require some time after the paperwork for approval of loan but its pre-approved almost instantly by Ah Longs. Somebody has said Banks won't break your arms and legs like what the Ah Longs are doing, well they're right instead a bank will break your spirit. Borrowers go to the Banks dealing with sweet elegant customer service officers. Ah Longs come to you with tattoos all over their body. (disclaimer: not every persons with tattoos all over their body are Ah Longs). HERE is a true life story of one blogger who had gone through hell with Ah Long for being a guarantor.
Above is a live performance by Afdlin Shauki aka Chief Kodok & Din Beramboi as guest artistes in AHA2 portraying them selves as 'Along from Bukit Beruntung'. Sorry the video is not very sharp and its in Bahasa Malaysia anyway its basically a comedy show of how Ah Longs solicit for business with no requirement of IRB returns form, Bank's 6 months statements not needed and no guarantor involved. But if you don't pay up chances are the Ah Longs will mutilate your fingers or arm. They ended the song naming the various branches nationwide and the number to call @ 24/7 service ext 12.
Yeah oh yeah we are all alive after so much hoo-ha for the whole of 2012. Nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh take that whoever are responsible for the doomsday hoax, a fraud and a cruel and blatant lie scaring the hell out people that something terrible is going to happen, then publish books and videos on "how to survive the apocalypse" just like the same Y2K scare.
The problem with people some how some will fall for the scam who tend believe it. They choose to waste their money buying fake information on "how to survive". Some people will buy worthless survival kits, and some will even buy spaces in shelters that are not going to be built - ever!. Rumours that electricity would be cut off with no water supply for weeks. So instant noodles is the number one hot favorite food stacked up, bursting the kitchen cabinet.
Fingers were all pointing at the Mayans for creating the chaos which to some experts defended that they did not prophecy or predict 2012 Doomsday. This day of 21- 12 -12 also happens to fall on the Winter solstice of the year. The Solstices is an astronomical event as well as one of the most important and major festivals celebrated by the Chinese and East Asians during the 冬至Dōngzhì Festival lit. the beginning of Winter solar term, a celebration for a bountiful harvest before taking a winter break and to begin again after the Spring festival which is the Lunar Chinese New Year.
Now that doomsday has caught everyone's attention we cannot deny the fact that death no longer exist to be swept under the carpet just because its dreadful word? There is some truth to this saying, “There are only two things you can count on in life: death and taxes.” Everyone experiences death. Death and dying are an inevitable part of human life.

The above word is 死 sǐ *die* a strictly no-no and a taboo among the Chinese community as most people must refrain from mentioning or hearing it as though the sound vibes could kill. Due to the homophones (sǐ ) for *die* sǐ and number *4* 四 sì having the same sound most Chinese are shying away from this number but conveniently replacing it with 3A which is widely accepted.
These people from Ghana are indeed very open minded and creative. So have you ever thought of your own funeral or the coffin design before? Yeah some would definitely utter "choy choy choy" immediately. Only two person I know have done their afterlife arrangement while alive and kicking. As the saying goes "Why let your children go through Hell when you are in Heaven?". One is a Canadian blogger Uncle Lee and the other my late papa who had his grave and tomb completed at age 50 with a pre-booked ancient Chinese shamrock coffin made from huge, bulky and heavy chengal wood and he lived on till 92 years. Bananaz would love to have a coffin in the shape of a F1 race car, but then there may a slight technical problem. Accordingly Heaven refuse to accept Bananaz and Hell is afraid Bananaz will take over so where on space or earth is Bananaz gonna drive his F1 Formula car then? Be contented and make do with the banana shape coffin will do.
♔A very prestigious cardiologist died and was given a very elaborate funeral by the hospital he worked for most of his life...A huge heart covered in flowers stood behind the casket during the service as all the doctors from the hospital sat in awe. Following the eulogy, the heart opened, and the casket rolled inside. The heart then closed, sealing the doctor in the beautiful heart forever.

At that point, one of the mourners just burst into laughter. When all eyes stared at him, he said, 'I am so sorry, I was just thinking of my own funeral... I'm a gynaecologist.
The vicar fainted.♔
Do you think with your head or act with your heart? It has been a long tradition we connect the mind with the brain. Other than the heart being a muscular organ, the size of a fist weighing about 300 grams that pumps blood, the MDBG Chinese Dictionary also defines heart as mind / intention / centre / intelligence. So what the heck a heart has a mind or just a figure of speech? No argument here but to follow this saying 'follow your heart' where heart is driven by love and the analytical head is driven by logic and analytical.
Can the heart really dictate one’s actions? Here is an excerpt from scienceray.com "According to the Institute of Heartmath, Dr J Andrew Armour first introduced the concept of a functional 'heart brain' in 1991. His work revealed that the heart has a complex intrinsic nervous system, contains around 40,000 neurons that qualifies it as a 'little brain'. The heart communicates with the brain in ways that influence how we perceive and respond to stimulus coming from the outside world. The heart can even cause the brain to obey its commands hence has a mind of its own."
Thought supposed to stop mentioning 心xīn *heart* however this is something not to be missed. The above word is "ài," the traditional Chinese character that clearly explains 愛 *Love* which has to be a combination of both the 心xīn *heart* and situated right in the middle of the word 受shòu *accept*. Any idea why a person with a broken heart is tossing and turning on bed all night long? The answer lies in the broken heart itself as the jagged edges of the heart keep poking at the body. Anyway enjoy the Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus below.
Just before the eye 'open knife' Bananaz searched the internet and found so much more information of our human eye. What is the equivalent megapixels camera does the human eye have? Digital camera manufacturers capitalize their advertisements on their products' megapixels though may not always be the case of when more is better. A megapixel refers to the amount of pixels, or dots, captured in each picture. The word pixel is based on a contraction of pix (pictures) and el (for 'element'). Even the latest point-and-shoot digital cameras contain 8 to 16MP 'MegaPixels' of resolution, while some professional DSLR cameras contain over 20MP. Our human eye can handle approximately 576 megapixels.

WhyAskWhy men are prone to suffer from CVD 'Colour Vision Deficiency' but not women? Answer is simple because 'Men are from <strike>Yahoo</strike> *Yáng*陽, Women are from <strike>Goggle</strike> *Yīn*陰' haha. Actually the answer lies in the genes and the types of cones (Short, Medium & Long waves) which are photoreceptor cells in the retina of the eye that are responsible for colour vision. Colour blindness is heredity, but only seemed to affect the men as one in 12 of them are colour blind compared to one in 255 women. Individuals who are colour blind have only two types of cones, making them dichromatic and most animals are colour blind too. Most people have three types of cones described as being trichromatic. Some women may have more types of cones than men so they recognise colour differently because females have two (XX) chromosome while males have only one (XY) chromosome. Because of the X-linked trait an estimated 2-3% of women are considered tetrachormats as they may have a 4th cone. Wonder if women are colour blind what will happen to the cosmetics & fashion industry? Business will be just as good or worst?

What about olfactory (sense of smell) sensitivity? According to BBC women have a greater ability to detect smell than men, and this may be linked to estrogen hormones. The structure of the nose is the same in women as men, and they don’t have any more receptors in the nose, but studies have shown smells activate a greater region in the brain in women than men. In one study, they were able to do better than men in differentiating between odors and picking up faint and slight odors. Saw one of our local TV advertisement regarding fresheners where the husband was lying comfortably in bed about to sleep until the wife hop on the bed to discover the bad odour of the bed sheet & pillow. What Are Cataracts?

Cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens. The lens must be clear in order to focus light properly onto the retina. If the lens has become cloudy, this is called a cataract. Many people say that their vision with cataracts is similar to the effect of looking through a dirty car windshield. During this 8th lunar month our mind would be beaming with delight to celebrate the Mooncake or Mid-Autumn Festival and sharing fairytales of the goddess of moon, Chang' e 嫦娥 with her jade rabbit, paper lanterns etc. This year's Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 30Sept2012 where it is a full moon on the lunar 15th moon. Psychiatrist Glenn Wilson found that the full moon has been portrayed in folklore and legends for centuries as cause for celebration, particularly in the times before modern lighting.
"There is good reason to believe that people's personalities do change around the time of the full moon, not because of any astronomical force, but because it creates the optimum lighting conditions for feeling carefree and mischievous," Wilson told the paper.

Heard this sweet song umpteenth times by the late Teresa Teng but did not realise its musical coherence with the poem until this date. The lyric is based on an existing prose by a famous Chinese writer Su Shi (蘇軾 1063-1101 AD) better know as Su Dongpo (蘇東坡). It was written during full moon in the annual Chinese Harvest Moon Holiday, when he was sharing drinks with friends, having already been sabotaged by his political rivals, fallen out of favor on his official post in Imperial China, and narrowly escaped a death sentence. Will a moon so bright ever arise again?
Drink a cupful of wine and ask of the sky.
I don't know where the palace gate of heaven is,
Or even the year in which tonight slips by.
I want to return riding the whirl-wind!
But I feel afraid that this heaven of jasper and jade
Lets in the cold, its palaces rear so high.
I shall get up and dance with my own shadow.
From life endured among men how far a cry!
Round the red pavilion
Slanting through the lattices
Onto every wakeful eye,
Moon, why should you bear a grudge, O why
Insist in time of separation on filling the sky?
Men know joy and sorrow, parting and reunion;
The moon lacks lustre, brightly shines; is all, is less.
Perfection was never easily come by.
Though miles apart, could men but live for ever
Dreaming they shared this moonlight endlessly!

The late Neil Armstrong, commander of Apollo 11, the first man who set foot on the moon on 20th July 1969 with this historic phrase "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" may have missed the close encounter with Chang'e 嫦娥, wife of the legendary hero Hou Yi, a great archer who accomplished great achievements by shooting down nine extra suns. Chang'e 嫦娥 rose up to the sky immediately after drinking the elixir and lived on the moon ever since. However the State Council of China officially approved the launch of the lunar orbiting probe program in January 2004 and the leading engineering team named it "Chang'e Project". At 18:05hrs October 24th, 2007, China's first self-developed lunar orbiting satellite "Chang'e One" blasted off successfully in Xichang Satellite Launch Center.

With less than only three days we would be looking forward to watch the
assorted lanterns of all shapes and sizes to brighten up our streets after we bid farewell to
the Hungry Ghost Month 鬼月 *Guǐ Yuè*. The most fearful 15th moon (full moon) of the 7th lunar month lunar where most Chinese believed the King of
Hell opens the gates of hell allowing ghosts to visit the living
world will be closed again on Sep 15, 2012. When as a kid on the 15th
moon (full moon) our old folks forbid us to roam the streets at night and we can only
sing along with Creedence Clearwater Revival's Bad Moon Rising and the chorus goes like this... "Don't go out tonight, well it's bound to take your life, there's a

Western people have Halloween festival with similarity to the
Chinese celebrating the Hungry Ghost Festival having the
same purpose to honor the deceased. The Hungry Ghost
festival originated from China since the Liang Dynasty in 502 AD, it
was then evolved into the present ZhongYuan Festival 中元節 *zhōng yuán
jié* . Much have been said by bloggers HappySurfer & Panda Foong about this ghostly festival,
you can read them HERE and HERE and HERE. When we talked about
ghost, death is closely associated and goes hand in hand. Both words are a strictly NO-NO
particularly in this ghost month.

This ghostly month Bananaz has attended two Chinese funerals, one Christian and the other Taoist and was wondering is there any correlation between death and Hungry Ghost Month?. These two funerals were before 15th moon (full moon) and hearsay if any seriously sick or dying person who can pull through the 15th moon will not likely to die soon. How true? As usual in funerals we have this traditional 'Wake' ceremony used to be held in the house of the deceased but as the years go by modern memorial parlours have mushroomed through out the country and gaining popularity among the public. According to Wikipedia 'wake' has evolved into the word "watch," and it is in this sense that people have a "wake" for someone who recently died. While the modern usage of the verb "wake" is "become or stay alert" meaning, a "wake" for the dead harks back to the antiquated "watch" or "guard" sense. This is contrary to the urban legend that people at a wake are waiting in case the deceased should "wake up". My grandma (mom's mother) woke up couple of minutes later after my mom and relatives dressed her up in those longevity dresses for the dead when she was pronounced dead by doctor. She lived for more than a decade thereafter the incident. Cannot imagine the helter-skelter if she should 'wake up' after placing her corpse into the casket. It is customary for Chinese to offer donation in a form of cash literary known as 'white gold' 白金 *bái jīn* or some may prefer giving a wreath. Colours are used to differentiate bereavement or wedding celebration thus 紅白喜事 *hóng bái xǐ shì* weddings & funerals. The red 紅 *hóng* signifies wedding and white 白 *bái* refers to funerals.

For those celebrating Chinese New Year this word is the most popular besides the dragon in almost every household or shops. You see it everywhere, on angpow packets, paperbags, hampers, lanterns, greeting cards whatnot. They are hanging or pasted on walls or at strategic location as advised by fengshui master. Some people do believe that by placing the word 福 *fú* upside down would bring them good luck as fortune some how will drop in. How true? *Gong*Xi*Fa*Cai*

Addendum: Thanks to Casendra for shedding some light on the inverted 福*fú* as *dào* is a homophone word for either 倒*dào*[invert] or 到*dào*[arrive]. Thus for fortune 福*fú* to arrive which is 福到 *fú dào* the inverted 福*fú* represents a combination of invert/arrive.
Imagine a song without lyrics could win her the Best Singing Award of European World Music Awards in 2009. It became a hit on December 1, 2010 during a Grammy Award presentation and remained as the Grammy's best music for three weeks and the song name is 忐忑 pinyin:*tǎntè* meaning "Disturbed or Uneasy". She is a Chinese folk music soprano singer who hails from Guizhou Province. Her name is Gong Linna 龚琳娜, born in Guiyang in 1975, who won the Best Female Singer at China Central Television National Young Singer TV Grand Prix in 2000. It was in 2010 where hundreds of thousands of netizens watched her video clip singing 忐忑*tǎntè* that took China by storm.
By itself 忐 and 忑 ma favorite companion the MDBG dictionary translated both as 'nervous' but when combined 忐忑 pinyin:*tǎntè* it means "Disturbed or Uneasy".
Now look at 忑*tè* the 'Up' has been replaced with 'Down下*xià*' on top of 'Heart心*xīn*'. So the Ups and Downs inevitably perturbed the Heart resulting a 'disturbed or uneasy' person.
Cutest little 6 year old Chinese girl - on China's Got Talent with her 忐忑 pinyin:*tǎntè*. The pretty judge asked her why she chose a song without lyrics. Little girl replied saying there is except they are 亂七八糟 *luàn qī bā zāo* 'everything in disorder'. Sorry Bananaz not able to translate the full conversation but judging by the faces of laughter with tears you shall get the message, coz actions speak louder than words. Kindly standby your tissue paper after you ROTFL *roll on the floor laughing* when your heart is perturbed.
Just zooming in at a small portion of internet regarding em@ils where '@' is part and parcel of our mundane life. Emails that are in circulation ranges from A-Z comprises of the good, bad and ugly. Some are informative and some educational however there are bound to attract Big Ghost Head 大鬼頭 pinyin:*dà guǐ tóu* a common ghostly name used among the Chinese community for mischievous leader. They start the mouse rolling sending viral hoax emails as per their whims and fancies around the globe like those hand written chain letters of the past. Gratitude highlighted a few randomly in his last post "It's a sad sad life!" where he ended up perplexed and said ~ "I am totally screwed up now and have little chance of recovery." You are not alone Gratitude, it's indeed a bewilderment if we were to follow all the emails received, we can't eat, drink or sleep in peace.

Recently a nagging email which appeared few years ago re-surfaced again and hope this entry may shed some light and may save lives. Please do not follow the tactic below and put a stop in forwarding, it's a HOAX.

Subject: ATM Pin Number reversal tactic

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN in reverse. For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location. [...].

Bananaz have checked with a banker friend whose answer is self explanatory.. "If you key-in your pin numbers wrongly for three times, your ATM card will be 'eaten' by the machine. So what is the difference if you key-in your pin number in reverse". Kindly check it out with snoopes.com as they have confirmed its FALSE in their title "PINned Hopes". The system was patented in 1998 but nothing came of it as it was not viable. Totally agree with this quote by Chuck Stones of the Kansas Bankers Association in 2004 ~ "I'm not sure anyone here could remember their PIN numbers backward with a gun to their head". Another alternative website for checking on hoax is truthorfiction.com.

On a brighter side let's relax, have some fun with this cute ATM machine. Credit goes to the original artist for the great sense of humor. Wonder any bank may wish to buy this brilliant idea to generate more transactions. Anyway guys.. dream on!! (If you have a challenge with the wordings pleaze press 'Ctrl' & '+').
