இ No School

That's right when as a kid we often say this 'Tomorrow No School' on any public holidays or term holidays. Hope we are not the proximate cause of heart attacks for our English teachers then, perhaps Suituapui got to thank his lucky stars for not having this bunch of students like us in his English class.

It has been a week since schools nationwide in Malaysia are closed for the annual 7 weeks final term holiday. What a temporary relief as the number of road hogs within the premises of schools and highways during peak hours are at a minimal, thus a smooth flow of traffic. HappySurfer blogged about school is out where her colleagues are clocking in early at work with better mood. Also a tremendous relief for parents who need not have to get up extra early clutching the steering wheel in anxieties, braving traffic jams sending their children to school. Those who shuttles back and forth daily to office by car would have some relaxation on their brake pedal, well at least until schools reopen next year.

Not sure about the rest, Bananaz had mixed feeling during his child hood school holidays. Jubilant over a few weeks break but some how over shadowed by sadness of being broke, no school equals no money! Back in the 60's, my 30sen pocket money were given by Papa from Mon-Fri only, weekends and holidays makan sendiri *eat your own*. So 10sen for a packet of take away economy noodles bought early in the morning while on the way to school to be eaten at recess time. How nice by then the noodles had doubled its size because of the curry gravy and the balance of money after drinks would straight go into my porcelain rooster money box supposedly for emergency use only and that emergency is everyday during the school holidays lolz. Wonder how much pocket money are the kids receiving from their parents nowadays? Wanna share some of your experience?

Most Chinese character derived its words from pictorial drawings and over the years the word 'car ' from a pictogram of a cart/chariot gradually transformed to car 車 *pinyin* [chē].  Enjoy the video clip to learn more on the illustration of the strokes and pronunciation. The simplified version is 车.

A car車 is no longer a luxury any more but a necessity which is a must for every household. Anyway, Bananaz would make an exception for [SK] & SeniorsAloud who travel by other means of transport which is their preference. Human beings are strange creatures..they send their car on the dot for preventive maintenance when it reaches every 5000km on the odometer, replacing spark plugs, oil filter and engine oil etc. True enough a car is paramount but how many would make it a point to go for medical check once a year which is just as important? Well, when was the last time you have taken your battered body for a blood screening test or a dentist check up? Do you know your latest BP rate and cholesterol level? Would like to reiterate here, many are falling into this pitfall of chasing wealth when young at the expense of health but when older to spend wealth chasing back health. Just a friendly reminder please go for a full medical check up NOW ~ Just Do It!

OK relax since tomorrow no school and no office, its a public holiday, let's have some fun with numbers. This is very freakishly accurate to find out..your role model.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL???
Try it without looking at answers below (plz don't cheat)
1) Pick your favourite number between 1-9
2) Multiply by 3 then
3) Add 3, then again multiply by 3 (I'll wait while you get the calculator....)
4) You'll get a 2 or 3 digit number
5) Add the digits together into a single digit

Now with that number scroll down do a match to see who is your ROLE MODEL from the list below:

ROLE MODEL:
1. Albert Einstein
2. Barack Obama
3. Mother Teresa
4. Martin Luther King Jr
5. Bill Gates
6. Mahatma Gandhi
7. Brad Pitt
8. Warren Buffet
9. Bananazஇ
10. Margaret Thatcher

I know, I know....I just have that special effect on people to go bananas ....one day you too can be like me...~;). Beleaf me! Whoa! Stop changing different numbers becoz I am still your favorite role model, just deal with it. Muahahaha!!!!
Bananaz giving credit to the original joker & tQ to LeeBC for getting me trapped.

So happy it's school holiday coz can wake up an hour later than on school days. ^^

lina said...

For me, my school holiday would me going "jalan-jalan" with my grandparents. I don't stay in my hometown during school holidays because my parents let me follow whomever relative that is willing to take care of me during that time. I covered the whole Peninsula Malaysia with relatives but not with my immediate family. huhu

lina said...

Last time, my pocket money was 50sen. Enough to eat curry noodle and drinks too.

Now, my Son gets RM3 and that's with "bekal" provided each morning. @.@

Charmaine Pua said...

Hahahaha no matter pick what number also end up is 'Bananaz' geh!!

Charmaine Pua said...

Your mum won't cook for you during holiday?

Connie said...

Bananaz, you are my role model, of course. hahaha! :-D

My kids got pocket money when they were young but not any more. One is grown and works a job full time. The other is still in school but is a teenager and works odd jobs and makes his own pocket money.

Seeing how the symbol for the word car developed was interesting.

Fun post! :-)

Amelia said...

OMG.....my role model is...............no 9 @ Bananaz. hahahaha Seriously I didn't cheat, I'm a very honest people.
Hey, got award or not?? hahaha....

My son when no school, so eager and look forward to school. When got school, he look forward to the next holiday. Haiz.... headache.
Gave him RM2 daily, ha tah pau from home and keep his RM2.
Have a nice day.

wenn said...

haha..that's nice! Btw, tmr I go work..

rainfield61 said...

Oh no. I "have office" tomorrow.

Hopefully there will be no traffic jam at Penang Bridge tomorrow.

lena said...

Haha! so now Mr Banana is everyone's role model! Very clever! I find that character 车 looks like a wheelbarrow. Yeah, driving these few weeks in so much stress free, less buses on the road but more crowd in coffeeshops.

FiSh said...

i wish to have school sometimes because i can save all the money my mum gives me each schooling day :)

Reanaclaire said...

hahaha..yes yes!! we like to say NO SCHOOL.. we never say, school is closed for holidays.. but "got school ah?" " no school ah?" STP pengsan.. but then it is Malaysia ma, right? For me school hols now do not mean as much as those days... when kids were schooling, year end holidays is the time to rewind.. no stress chasing them to study.. it is a time to RELAX!

[SK] said...

hahaha, no difference for me as i still do my assignments and go to college without fail.. no holiday for me lah~~ but maybe one thing, i can sleep more soundly because my nephew doesn't need to wake up early and crying that he want to sleep more and doesn't want to go to school~~ :D

[SK] said...

wow, 30sen a day for pocket money and 10sen for a bowl of noodles?? that's how many years back?? now that a bowl of noodles is at least RM4.50, 45 times more!! OMG, just see how scary the inflation can be!! but still we are earning that little salary~~ @_@"

[SK] said...

hmmm, i think whatever transportation mode you choose in this bolehland, we all ended up feeling frustrated!! hahaha, because the problem is, we just have such a lousy transportation system!!

[SK] said...

eih, so bad lah, that game will always only give 1 answer that is 9. Bananazஇ!! and you know why this is such?? ok ok, let the smart [SK] tells you that secret behind.. :D

[SK] said...

1. let your number be x
2. multiply by 3 means you get 3x
3. add 3 and multiply by 3 you get 3(3x+3) = 9x+9 = 9(x+1)

that means you will always get a number in multiples of 9, and for all such numbers the digits will always end up to the sum of 9.. hehehehe!! :D

Lily Riani said...

this is what i noticed in chinese writing, the olden words are from their own view ie paddy filed, mouth, water, fire...etc, generally the basic surrounding stuff in out life. you can kinda make out of it. why not you do an entry on these.... its fund.

suituapui said...

Omigawd!!! You're my role model!!! *pengsan

suituapui said...

P.S. I wonder how many actually needed a calculator to calculate that. Today's students/young people, I'm not surprised. Dependent on technology.

suituapui said...

I did not like school holidays - last time, stayed at home only...no friends and NO pocket money.

Was big already when finally, I got the chance to visit Kuching. Where got like the children today? Come any holiday, even long weekends, they would be zooming to some place in the four corners of the world to enjoy themselves.

My time, when I grew older, to go to Kuching, I had to use a ship - Rajah Mas or Pulau Kidjang, both have joined the Titanic already...

So sad hor...our time?

suituapui said...

Why "no school"? I always answered - Got! The school will be here all right.

In Chinese, they say, "Tomorrow no study kah?" (ma chai boh thak chek kah) or some may say, "Tomorrow no read (books) kah?" So I wonder how the "no school" thing came about...

yvonne said...

Then: "Tomorrow no school," I enjoyed my days without books - such relaxing time.

Now: "Tomorrow no school," a relief for me, so that I no need to rush (the kids) to school and work.

yvonne said...

Btw, my pocket money back then during primary school was 10cents for Std 1, 20cents for Std 2 and the max I received was 60cents.

If I didn't spent the money, it didn't go to piggy bank but I would carry forward the money to the next day. No accumulating method. We lived in modesty then :)

yvonne said...

Okay, I must admit I'm very kiasi one. Every alternate year, must do blood screening. Every visit to doc, must ask for BP although I merely have stomachache.

yvonne said...

Re role model, I didn't cheat but I feel that Bananaz is cheating, ceh! No matter what number I chose, it'll turn out to be #9....

MODERN ROBINSON CRUSOE said...

Haha no.9 :) Yeah i'm sure kids nowadays get more pocket allowance

Hayley said...

Looks like you are the one cheating leh... =_=

Lina இ:You're first haha. Sorry not a member of FC Club. So you can really feel the relief to gain an hour extra sleep. During my holidays either go to my 2nd Uncle's place to 'help' tap rubber and get a free haircut coz he was a barber or to my Aunt to 'help' in coffee shop can get lots of free soft drinks. At home we can only take soft drinks during festive celebration.

Charmaine Pua Li Ping இ: Gotcha haha. The pocket money is for buying food at recess time, other than that would have lunch at home everyday. Since no school can eat at home.

Daisy இ: Haha meant to be a joke on #9. Glad your two children are able to earn a living and independent now. Shall post more about Chinese words in future/ tQ

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Amelia's De-ssertஇ:Haha just like me during my first try didn't know I fell into the trick. Lucky kid can tah pau thus keep RM2. During my time ma Mama not good in preparing bread in fact come to think about it we never had bread at home only biscuits, the round think Marie & cream crackers biscuits.

Wenn இ: Oh you holiday in Sepang ended now back to work fully juvenated.

rainfield61 இ: You got office tomorrow? Happy working.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Lena இ: Just joke to brighten the Tuesday blues since Monday is a holiday haha. Really like a wheelbarrow eh.

FiSh இ: Yeah take the pocket money and tah pau from home haha.

Reanaclaire இ: Yeah STP pengsan. You are OK now children all grown up and relax already waiting to receive you title of 'por por' haha.

Tekkaus said...

To me school holiday is like a gift from heaven. Haha :D

Tekkaus said...

I love my school holidays as I get to rest, play games, vacation and be with my family all the time. :D

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

[SK]இ:You're not affected, holiday or no school you've got your assignments. Yeah a inflation of 45 times more. Real sad our transportation system sucks. Smart smart smart on the deciding number 9 no matter what number you are thinking..hehe

Lily Riani இ:Okie dokie great suggestion tQ will 'research' and post them up.

Suituapui இ: Ahem! Sure to make you pengsan Bananaz as your role model and the Engrishe haha. NO pocket money you no likey school holidays lolz. Those days roads are not that easy. Even Reanaclaire used this term 'no school' too haha. We speak English with our mind translating from Chinese. In Hokkien we say 'boh gia lai' so direct translate we would say "Sir today 'no bring come'" when teacher asked for school fees.lolz

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Yvonne இ:Then and Now sama sama juga with the feelings but as different roles. Oh pocket money rolled over so if you didnt spend any it would be merely 10sen per week? Not say kiasi its a responsibility to our body. Haha sorry lah someone got me tricked and then gotcha in the #9.

MRC இ: Numbers can be quite fascinating to play about and trick people. Nowadays kids get lots of extras compared to those days.

Hayley இ: Lolz

The origin of Chinese characters is very interesting but the shortforms are destroying the real strokes. Sad in a way but Taiwan insists on retaining the old written form which is a good thing, I feel, otherwise the origin of the character will be lost.

Bananaz, thanks for the link. Much appreciated.

Small Kucing said...

LOL....funny trick with the maths. Anyway, ya it's more relax on the road during school holidays but looking for parking at shopping complex during this time is a nerve wrecking experience

Hi Bananaz, very interesting. Yes, I still remember that wonderful expression, "tomorrow no school"!
And I was every teacher's nightmare too.

Role model? Two.
My father. He taught me to walk tall always.
My mother. Taught me love and respect for others, irrespective of creed and colour.

You have a nice day.

London Caller said...

Ha! Me slightly better than you.
Only 50sen.
Back then, 50sen was bigger than a car wheel.
Could use it to buy a lot of stuff.

These days, 50sen can only buy you half a pack of tissue papers..

How things have changed huh!

Do you guys still remember our ex-ex-ex PM's slogan?
0% Inflasi?

Sorry for this late delay.
Went to Belgium last week.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ:Your time 50sen bigger than car wheel, mine was bigger than bullock cart lolz. Yalor some adventurous PM wanna have 0% inflasi. Whoa tQ for the choc from Belgium..haha.

foongpc said...

When I was schooling I loved school holidays!! Now I prefer school days cos there are usually less crowds and kids at the shopping malls hahaha!!

foongpc said...

30 sen pocket money? That must be very long time ago! Now RM3 also can't survive haha!

foongpc said...

Thanks for the video! Nice : )

foongpc said...

Haha! Most people send their car for service and checks more frequently than their own health check-up.

foongpc said...

LOL at the number trick! I remember I posted a similar trick on my blog, so didnt fall for this! : D

Leovi said...

I love the holidays, ami I just need 3 weeks to avoid lessons.

Leovi said...

When you're a child the money is no problem with long time is good for developing the imagination and not get bored. The children who are bored who have more.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

foongpc இ:Like [SK] said 45 times inflasi. Oh you loved holidays still got given pocket money then. People neglect their most important assets. Oh really cant remember the number tricks posted by you, so you are not taken for a ride haha.

Leovi இ:Guess all kids would love schools. When schooling life is like in heaven other than the burning midnight oil sitting for exams until we stepped out of the real world where we see lots of devilish things happening.

Leovi said...

My son is 21 years, college student, I give you 50 Euros weekly, but there has to be sought food from Monday to Friday.

London Calller said...

Definitely, must cuti-cuti Malaysia first before you visit other countries lah.

I have not been to Sabah & Sarawak yet. ><

Malu lah~

Ice said...

Bananaz, this is such a fun post to read. Mom used to give me 30sen for pocket money also. I hardly ever spent them. That's why no makan so much skeleton all over. When I was at secondary school, mom suddenly decided to give me 10 ringgit a week. Thatwas more than cukup. I hardly spent it either haha! Not sure about how much kids are getting for their weekly pocket money. How much are you giving your kids these days?

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Leovi இ: Could be your cost of living is higher in Spain for us college student would averagely get 25 euros and for lower schooling kids at 4 euros per week

London Calller இ: Eh didn't realize your calller is spelt with extra 'l' until today. Very common for people who didn't travel within own country. Got a cousin migrated to UK have not been to nearby countries thinking got all the time in the world. Both hubs & wife migrated to Australia regretted didn't make a trip then.

Ai Shiang இ: Wah you keep all your pocket money and not spending a sen in school? My daughter gets RM2 per day and that was a decade ago no more kids attending school now. Saw comments roughly their kids get RM3 per day.

Tina said...

There is always some drama going on with the schools isnt there! and yes I would be lost without my car. we do check it more than ourselves dont we! good point lol

Leovi said...

I really enjoy walking or cycling, but the car is needed for longer trips. In 12 years my car has 50,000 miles.

London Caller said...

Ha ha... Typo lah.
Had too much choco in Belgium, fingers got bigger.
Mistyped an extra L.
You happy with this explanation? LLLOLLL

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Tina இ:Car and human body equally important cannot afford to have breakdown on highway and also breakdown with disease.

Leovi இ: Mine is 17 year old car done about 250,000miles. Here we used km which is about 400,000km.

London Caller இ:Lolll haha.

Autumn Belle said...

Yeah, yeah, I love 'tomorrow no school' and hate 'tomorrow got school' - then, now and forever... unless of course if got school means that's the only time you get to see your heartthrob/teen idol.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Autumn Belle இ: Our teachers always wanna correct us telling us the school will be there all the time haha. Guess fall back on the golden rule, live in moderation.

Leovi said...

Amazingly, my role model is Bananaz. Not wrong, I love your sense of humor.

Quay Po Cooks said...

hahaha, that is so true, no school means no money. Nowadays, I don't think this apply to the kids. Got school no school, still get money.
