Recently a nagging email which appeared few years ago re-surfaced again and hope this entry may shed some light and may save lives. Please do not follow the tactic below and put a stop in forwarding, it's a HOAX.
Subject: ATM Pin Number reversal tactic
If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN in reverse. For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location. [...].
Bananaz have checked with a banker friend whose answer is self explanatory.. "If you key-in your pin numbers wrongly for three times, your ATM card will be 'eaten' by the machine. So what is the difference if you key-in your pin number in reverse". Kindly check it out with snoopes.com as they have confirmed its FALSE in their title "PINned Hopes". The system was patented in 1998 but nothing came of it as it was not viable. Totally agree with this quote by Chuck Stones of the Kansas Bankers Association in 2004 ~ "I'm not sure anyone here could remember their PIN numbers backward with a gun to their head". Another alternative website for checking on hoax is truthorfiction.com.
On a brighter side let's relax, have some fun with this cute ATM machine. Credit goes to the original artist for the great sense of humor. I normally would check with Snopes before forwarding such e-mails. I barely ever forward any actually since most of them are hoaxes.

yeah, while it came as an interesting info to me, i still doubt the credibility of the source and the reliability of the knowledge.. reversed PIN?? haha, so it's a hoax huh..
very true!! with a dagger poked at your stomach, i don't think i can figure out what's my PIN number in reverse order.. most probably will have already keyed in the correct one before even i could figure out the reverse!! :D
well, true is that, just key in any wrong PIN for three times and the card will be detained by the machine.. but cannot guarantee your safety when the robbers gets angry about this..
i read about that tip too but wonder if it is true. and agree with SK that not sure if safety still can be sure or not after put wrong pin number. :/

One இ Good habit to check first before forwarding. There are lots of gimmicks with emails to mention one eg..if you donate to this sick person Ericsson will give free phone etc and whatnot.

Caroline இ To escape unharm better be right the first time. Got a client who lost his son to robbers when he tried to resist them at the ATM machine. Better be safe than sorry.
OK believe it or not, I don't use ATM! LOL!
The only machines I use in the bank is the cash deposit machine to pay my credit card and also the cheque machine to bank in my cheques. Haha!
I used to receive all those 'con' emails. I still receive them now but I press delete straight away without reading LOL!
Oh that reminds me, I have over 600 unread emails in my inbox and I feel like just deleting them all! : )

Wenn இ Bananaz have changed strategy to withdraw RM1000 at one time and keep RM200 in wallet and the rest keep at home. Those days would withdraw RM200 each time. Approaching CNY have to be careful never to go ATM at night time.
Ha ha... As we become cleverer, the thieves also become cleverer mah.
A pandai robber would still try 1234 first even if you told him your password was 4321.
So the reverse PIN is not a good solution.
Best to give the customers 2 sets of PIN.
One for normal use.
The other one for "emergency" use that can also link to our mata suka makan duit kopi.

Made me laugh the ATM pin reversal hoax why would any sane person believe it?. Bonza idea that porno ATM should be more of 'em :-).
I seldom forward the emails I have received.
Moreover, most of these emails did not show the date of the original mail. It may be a very very old mail re-cycled in the cyberspace for years.

A few years back there were way too many hoax emails. Today this is less common as people spend their time on FB now.
True that :) 3 times salah - eaten by the machine. Lot of people still fall pray to hoax and con artist.
recently a client of my wife was conned by a Hong Kong caller - winning lottery and that he should bank in some money in order to receive it.
After being advised by my wife - guess what? - the customer still bank in the 50% of the requested amount of 15K to the con artist via other bank account.
later that day he come in to the bank again and wanted to withdraw balance of money. My wife refused to release the money to him.
he got so frustrated that he didn't get the money, he went straight to the counter to negotiate - but my wife act quick to inform all the bank officer to stop the transaction.
The customer left the bank and the next day he come back - realize he was really being conned.
Now I know what you think - who would be so silly to give that money?
those of reading this message - right now - 5% - 10% of you would fall pray to this scam under certain condition that you will not notice.
unfortunately - it has nothing to do with human intelligence for being conned. the magic work when - you have a good heart or a greedy heart to fall victim.
every time a con artist at work and that you think could be beneficiary to you or others - you can never spot anything wrong with the conversation.
Make yourself busy - you would likely hood do not entertain lot of funny business call.

But the forward email is really a hoax,definitely ATM machine will not accept reverse pin number.

This tip is no no. What if I type in reverse, and like your friend said, my card will be eaten by the machine. The robber doesn't get the money, then the robber may not want to leave in empty hand. Then, then, then.... I may in trouble. I heard that woman aged 70+ also got raped before :(

I once attended a city survival skill training and the trainer advised that when confronted by a robber and you have nowhere to run, just pretend to have epilepsy or seizure. Duuno whether I'll be brave enough to pretend that! @.@

i hope no one is ever forced by a thief or someone to take money out of an ATM machine. it's a terrifying situation.
i got this email a few years ago too. it's an utter crap and it gives bank customers a false sense of security.
i've tried entering the reverse pin nos before but no police squad has ever turned up.
it will just inform you that the wrong pin number has been entered.
Eh, how come I never received this mail before? But it doesn't really matter because I hardly go to ATM. Normally would ask from hubby as he is my walking ATM, kekeke....
But I would face BIG problem if kena robbed. No ATM card with me, my life would be in HUGE danger.

Yoong இ Wata! hide anywhere but just remember can find them. Last year before CNY changed RM1k new notes Bananaz so cleber hide in a place no one can find. Guess what he himself also can't find leh. Was cracking the head and worried thinking left inside the car, left on top of letter box while taking the letter, left on the stool outside the house while taking off the shoes obladi oblada sleepless nights really. Finally quite certain the new notes must be in the house but dunno where. The money surfaced half a year later together stacked up with some books..ish ish ish.

My earlier comment Bananaz mentioned his client's son was stabbed to death when he fought with the robber after leaving the ATM. A friend of mine got a cheap handbag which saved her thousands of ringgit when the snatch thief on motorbike only grabbed the handle of her handbag which tore apart. Lucky they never turned back coz it was a busy day.

Kian Fai Koh இ Never to click on any link sent from email. Banks have even advised us that they never sent any notice via email or sms of this sort. Sorry to say even if this reversal PIN does work doubt our mata2 are that efficient they probably come but at bullock cart speed.
Here's something my parents pointed out.
Those robbers are for the victim's money. They are probably desperate enough to resort to this. When they do NOT get the money, what would they actually do to the victim?

I will never remember any numbers backward. When I received emails that I am not familiar with, I usually delete it straight away. It is not a surprise I did not receive the one you are talking about. When being robbed, I think I will just "pengsan" and let them take anything they wan. LOL!
