What comes to mind ~ "I wanna go *open knife*" a direct word for word translation from Chinese? If you are Chinese probably will understand the message what *open knife* 開刀 *kāi dāo (pinyin) is all about, the same equivalent to 'go under the knife'. We can hardly hear this formal version in our daily conversation which is 動手術 dòng shǒushù (pinyin) meaning 'under going surgery' except over the news in TV or newspapers. Just curious any clue why Chinese say 開刀 kāi dāo *open knife*? Bananaz would like to express his sincere thanks for all the well wishes for a speedy recovery. With the current blurry vision, words gone awry when Uncle Lee pulled a fast one in giving away his Cadillac sending Bananaz to Cloud 9 but it was short lived as he was referring to the Cadillac cataract operation ;(.
'Open-ing knife'開刀 *kāi dāo*-ing
What Are Cataracts?
Cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens. The lens must be clear in order to focus light properly onto the retina. If the lens has become cloudy, this is called a cataract. Many people say that their vision with cataracts is similar to the effect of looking through a dirty car windshield. Click for more information EyeSmart.
Post Operation ~ Do's & Don'ts
Conversation at the Hospital Dispensary:
Lady : Here's your two months supply of eye drops 3 different types, one drop 4 times a day at 5 minutes interval after each drop.
Bananaz : Before or after food? *chuckles*
Lady: Before & after also can.

I hope your eye will heal quickly, Bananaz. Both my grandmother and mother had this surgery. I'm sure it is frustrating having blurry vision.
I have cataracts and have to wear glasses but i'm to young for surgery.
Ahhhhh!!!! So you're better now, can blog already. Take care, do not overstrain, avoid heat and smoke...keep those sunglasses on. It usually takes a long time to completely heal.
Have not visited for quite a while and just knew about your cataract operation. Hope you are much better now! Take care!
oh, let yr eyes rest more..that would speed up the recovery time.
Hope you get well soon!
Great! A new post. LOL
Just curious, did you have to change your lens? If not, how was the cataract removed?
Bananaz, good to have you back blogging again.
i guess Bananaz is recovering at a very satisfying pace right?? still can spam and then joke around your "open knife"..
well, no idea why it's called "open knife" but i guess perhaps it may come from "open your stomach with knife", and as time passed they just shortened it to "open knife"??
so Bananaz must be able to see more clearly and sharper now.. while we all wish to see you somewhere around in the blogsphere, we also think you have take more rest so that your eyes won't be too stressed.. another speedy full recovery to Bananaz!!
Open knife, hahaha! Makes me think that Hokkiens are such lazy people; we tend to cut short the statement, like "eat full" and "go sleep".
A speedy recovery to Bananaz!
wahhh...so now you have "bionic" eyes liow... see what also super clear!
Daisy இ tQ Oh you made me feel so 'old' when you mentioned your mom & grandma had the surgery haha juz kidding. Indeed its quite frustrating & lots of pressure at the ATM machine with a long Q behind my back when wanna make sure the figure is correct haha
Windsmoke இ too young can't have cataracts haha. tQ
suituapui இ tQ for the reminder always tell Mango that you selalu cautioned me with the sunglasses. Got two pairs one in her car and the other in mine for safety reasons
kitchen flavours இ tQ much better now progressing pretty well.
wenn இ yes must rest at some intervals and not to over stress tQ
Ai Shiang இ tQ hope you are well at DownUnder you are busy nowadays?
HappySurfer இ Yes my old natural lens with cataract is removed through this process called phacoemulsification which uses ultrasonic vibrations to dissolve (phacoemulsify) the clouded lens. These tiny fragmented pieces are then suctioned out. My ophthalmologist recommended Bananaz IOL (Intraocular lens) the artificial lens which is implanted into the thin capsular bag of my eye that houses the natural clouded lens previously occupied. Before or after meals? wahahahahaha You're such a teaser.
Jokes aside, i pray you heal well and quick. :)
+Ant+
SK இ Now joke about 'open knife' later flying knife haha. tQ for the explanation of the 'shortened' words that Chinese would talk. Just like sms got a reply with only 'k' which is a really short sms. Hope to blog often tQ for the well wishes again.
yvonne இ Right, lazy & time conscious people would always got for short cut. Like kopitiam kopi boy would shout 'o' short cut for kopi 'o'. tQ
reana claire இ you better be careful dont play play can even see through your house now and know what you did last Sunday haha.
Hi Bananaz, ya la, at first thought you had bought a Cadillac, ha ha....
I never appreciate this going under knife or whatever involves knives....especially if involves parts of our body. Above or below the equator. Above like cataract can improve vision, but if below, habis cherita!
I always thought Cataracts applicable to much older people, ok, now I enlightened already.
Here's wishing you a quick recovery....and you can differentiate between older and younger nurses, and a miniskirt and a dress.
You stay easy, my friend....
Incidentally, I would like it very much if you just address me as 'Lee'...without an
A' in front, ha ha.
Have a nice day,
Lee.
Arrg....eye surgery image....takut leh.....
Ahh, you kacau the pretty nurse at the Dispensary kah?.....if she tumbuk you the other eye habislah....
Besides blogging, don't over strain your eyes looking at the beautiful nurses.
Lee இ Still waiting for your Cadillac haha. The worst problem while at the hospital was like a 'blind' man. Left eye can't see clearly without specs and right eye got the patch blocking vision. Normally person above 60s are quite common to have cataracts. tQ
Pete இ You takt got geli looking at the knife poking through? Felt the same earlier but OK after some time. Yalor can kacau the sweet lady at the dispensary and Mango commented still cheeky with one eye haha.
ranifield61 இ Yeah agree too much exposure to the screen could be aching to the eye and also the head. Gotta blog moderately. Now can 'secretly' watch pretty ladies with sunglasses on hehe. tQ
Bananaz is recovering well, I hope?
Can blog long post already and informative as usual.
And tease lady at the dispensary some more. :)
Take care Bananaz (and Mango too!)
I am quite sure they will recover soon, you have the best medicine: a gransentido of humor. Greetings.
+Ant+ இ Think the lady didn't realize Bananaz pull a fast one on her haha. Healing well but vision not sharp as yet tQ Sadhu sadhu sadhu
lina இ Recovering well not fully focus choon choon yet. tQ. Mango is ma full time driver now hehe.
Leovi இ Some said will take months to fully focus properly. Gracias
Truly I would walk in the door you say.
Ha ha... True lah.
Why we say "open knife" not "open meat" huh?
We also have "open eye" too!
Not the open one eye close one eye punya "open eye".
But more like you go Chinese temple, the priests "open your eye" one.
People say once your third eye open, you can see more lah?!
Leovi இ WYSIWYG what you see is what you get hehe
London Caller இ Oh 'open eye' as in 'hoi kong' right?Hope you see the right things with your 3rd eye haha.
Bananaz, speedy recovery to your eyes. Hope both eyes are ok now. I think I have potential to have cataract at much younger age than you. I have eye sight problem even now. I can't see small print already, what the hell.
Can blog already!? Don't stress yourself, take good care of your eyes.
My husband went through cataract surgery too, he's fine now.

London Caller இ Just let me know once you can see the winning numbers haha.
Hi Bananaz, wishing you speedy recovery. The word "open knife" practically use by all Chinese regardless of any dialect. I was working as an operating theater nurse, day in and out regardless any operation we don't hear the Chinese mention "dong shoushu", it's always open knife.
I too was wandering how the word "open Knife" was invented. LOL
Have a nice week ahead, don't forget to wear your sunglasses.
Hi Bananaz
"before or after food" hahaha.. that was so funny. But I like your humour ..trust you to crack jokes after undergoing such a serious ordeal like 'open knife" LOL.
Glad you are blogging again. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay easy, take care.
Amelia இ True all Chinese dialects use the same term even in Mandarin language as well. tQ for your kind wishes sure will always remember to wear sunglasses
Angie இ That is the most usual at the dispensary while giving instructions on consuming medicine before /after food. Guess most med should be eaten after food. tQ sure will take it easy.
Yes, I did go inside the Visitor Centre in the Bridge House. Just that it was very small and narrow in there, walls covered by tourist brochures.
Didn't take any photos inside. ;o)
Bananaz so notti! Before or after somemore! LoL! I dare not watch the YouTube video. Seeing that eyeball staring at me is horrifying enough -.-
Yes, go and visit our local parks lah.

Good morning, Bananaz!
Bananaz, hope you are much much better now. Don't worry, those people I know can see very clearly for a long time after doing the surgery. So many people come here to cheer you up with jokes but hopefully, you don't laugh too much until tears come out of your eyes!
London Caller இ No wonder Uncle Lim so strong & powerful with such tree names haha.
foongpc இ Ok now healing progressively just that not able to focus sharply as yet. Yeah everybody is saying 'open knife' in all dialects too tQ
Izzy Mason இ tQ for dropping by & your thoughtful words
HappySurfer இ Good morning wishing you blue skies everything nice too.
Autumn Belle இ tQ for your kind words. Very concerned now as over a month already not able to focus sharply as yet.
