இ Random facts IV Part 2 ~ And Her Name Is Nikki

Autumn Belle dripped a bloody cute comment in my earlier entry of Part 1, The Good, The Bad & The Bloody singing "O-bloody, O-blaa - daa". Thanks to all for your kind concern and well wishes that my daughter would escape  inheriting the disease from me but sorry to say she has heterozygous alpha - Thalassemia. The Beatles lyriced it o-bloody clear ~ "Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah! lala how the life goes on." No matter what, life has to go on and nothing gonna stop us now.

My loving daughter would be at a disadvantage as she would be facing the monthly complication which will aggravate a further depletion of her hemoglobin at 107g/L average for female is (115-165g/L). There was debate where a girl claimed she is stronger than the boy with this remark 'Can you bleed for a week and survive?' Wow terror! Some women may want to make a stand that men took away too much from them that the word 'women' has a two letters 'wo' against three for 'men'. Adding another 'o' would balance the word in equilibrium 'woomen' but then it sounds like 'woo' the 'men'. However some woMEN are getting bolder considering men a menace and start blaming men for causing so much discomfort with the monthly MENstrual cycle or MENses and MENopause. Of late often hear this over the TV from a desperate housewife saying ~ 'do you think you can help me to put MENopause on pause?'. Really? Can it be on pause? Please do not get me wrong not provoking battle of the sexes here, I come in peace.

In the early 70s heard this music composed by Burt Bacharach on TV, who wrote it specially for his daughter but turned tragic in the later years. Immediately Bananaz fell in love with the music and also the name and discussed about it with girlfriend and both agreed to use the name for our daughter should we get married 5 or 10 years later when have our own children. Whoa that was surely a long term plan for our one and only child..And Her Name Is NIKKI..

Ever heard of this old Chinese saying "Those surname Lee cannot marry another with the same Lee surname  李婆嫁李公*Lǐ pó jià Lǐ gōng* Lee wife marrying Lee husband? In the ancient days parents forbid their children with the same surname to get married as they felt it would be like closest as brother and sister relationship. All sorts of excuses would arised, that the off springs would be affected physically and mentally, may get down syndrome etc. Or who knows it could be thalassemia that they were so worried about but could not put a name to it? Currently we are seeing uncountable Tan's marrying the Tan's and Xie's marrying the Xie's which has been accepted in this modern era.

Anyway Thalassemia diesease must not be forgotten and should be a concern for now or even in future when the traits keep multiplying. Allow me to reiterate here, if both parents carry a hemoglobinopathy trait, there is a 25% chance with each pregnancy for an affected child. Patients with Alpha-thalassemia minor usually do not require any specific treatment. Treatment for patients with Beta-thalassemia major includes chronic blood transfusion therapy, iron chelation and [ HERE ]. Some private Pathology Labs even have posters in their clinics offering various blood test packages for couples for HIV or Thalassaemia diseases etc before tying the nuptial knots which is highly recommend to do so.
The picture above is in Todai-ji temple in Nara, Hokkaido, one of the oldest wooden temple in the world built in 752 which lasted through some fires leaving behind some structures and the 16 meters bronze Buddha statue free from the devastating fire. There is a peculiar pillar with a hollowed out A4 size hole at the base. The Japanese belief it will cleanse ones bad luck if you are able to squeeze through the hole and will live a longer life. Bananaz successfully slipped through with ease and sincerely wish for another 2 decades starting today to further enlighten his life and anything more than that would be a bonus.

Hi, my first time visiting your blog. :) hope your daughter will stay strong to fight against the sickness she has. have a good weekend :)

Autumn Belle said...

Nikki is a nice name for a pretty girl. I hope there will be a complete cure for Thalassaema soon so that both you and your daughter will be free of this 'bug'.

Regarding the surname Lee, my grandma told me that people with surname Lee do not eat the Li-Yu (鲤鱼) or carp fish --> Lee eating-up another Lee!

Do you know that there is a soup we can make by boiling the carp fish with red beans? It is suppose to replenish the blood in our body.

wenn said...

wow, u managed to slip through the small hole!

lina said...

I hope both you and your daughter stay strong living your life despite your condition.

Wah, that you Bananaz? Managed to slip so easily from the hole? So nicely dressed some more. XD

Reanaclaire said...

bananaz, I dont know what to write after reading this... just pray that everything will be good soon.. my brother suffering from cancer has got well and he is doing fine now.. so i believe with the modern medical research, there is always a remedy..

MODERN ROBINSON CRUSOE said...

Hey Banz never say this yet : sorry for both of you - father & daughter for having to lived with these condition & take care & braved through these with strong spirit that you'll triumph over it

bluedreamer27 said...

I wish both of you all the best and do stay strong... God is always on our side guiding us right? And I'm sure he has a reason for this..

suituapui said...

Is she the one working in Penang? Sad to hear. In the old days, we did not know...and people just died. These days, we know a lot more...but most of the time, we are just as helpless and hopeless as we were before. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss...

London Caller said...

Ha ha!
How could you just make up the words like that?
But I kinda like the new interpretation!

So it's WOO men, not WOW men.

Yannie said...

I spotted Nikki's most recent picture at the most bottom middle small corner. She is growing up well and now she is an attractive lady. May her blessed with good health forever.

yvonne said...

Nikki is such a cute girl then and now. And it amazed me that Bananaz actually can squeeze through that A4 size hole :O

Stay strong and positive, like Bananaz always does.

Isaac Tan said...

hope you're daughter's condition improves..

i'm particularly intrigued by your last picture. Is that you that crawled out from the hole? I want to go there too, need to cleanse myself off bad lucks

Aunty Liew said...

Don't know what to say to you. May God Bless You All.

Ying Ying Dai Tao Har இ Hi tQ for dropping by and following Bananaz and your kind words. tQ

Autumn Belle இ tQ love the name Nikki else would not be keeping it for 13 years haha. There may not be any cure as the blood factory itself is faulty. Have not heard of the carp fish thingy where the Lee's are not to eat and also the carp fish with red beans too. The predicament here is the more blood that we make the more faulty rejected cells will occur and that could be harmful to our spleen and we must stay away from taking iron supplement. Thanks for the recipe.

wenn இ Maybe I was very thin then that was in 1983 and didnt even know I have this disease.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

lina இ tQ for your encouragement. Very thin then and Bananaz is on a biz trip.

reanaclaire இ tQ for your prayers and looking on the bright side we will be OK. Glad to hear your bro is well.

MRC இ tQ for your strong spirit, we will be physically strong.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

bluedreamer27 இ tQ yes have faith things happen for a reason and HE has big plans us.

suituapui இ Yes as an engineer in a MNC. For our case is not that bad as we do not need any treatment or blood transfusion. True ignorance is bliss and we are just as normal but with the awareness at least Nikki has to be careful not to marry someone with the same disease if not their child would be in big trouble if its Beta or major and will not survive till teen's age unless they both dont want a child then its different story.

London Caller இ Not bad for WowMen haha.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Sheoh Yan இ Yeah that's her latest pix taken in Japan during her company training tQ.

Yvonne இ Nikki is cute when young and very obedient no problem at all to take care of her. Give her a book and we can shop till we drop with no interference. Bananaz thin then and also thin now so no issue with the A4 size haha. Will stay strong tQ.

Isaac Tan இ tQ she will be fine like me. Yeah its yours truly no doubt 28 years ago. Just do it..go and get cleansed haha.

Wai Kit இ tQ so much for the blessings.

LifeRamblings said...

hope both of you will overcome this challenging time and win the battle. i'll pray the best for you and your daughter. think positively and enjoy life while you can.

LifeRamblings said...

good thing you managed to squeeze thru that hole with ease. you must have been very skinny then. Long live Bananaz.:)

LifeRamblings said...

i think families with the same surnames do not necessarily have blood ties. i've seen a few couples with the same surnames have married, and are blessed with beautiful normal kids without suffering any physical defects.

London Caller said...

>Is that car hanging upside down well secured?

Ha ha... Yes, I would have imagined so.
They should have used a lorry!
Will certainly look more impressive.

Lily Riani said...

firstly, i never knew how old you are or how young you are but base from the flow of your writing i always thought you are very young like mid 20s young. but when i saw nikki's pic.... err.....now i need to reimage you in my brain. hahahha.... i have a few friends with the same medical disadvantage but they are healthy babies and mummies now. am sure it will work well for your whole family.

god will not test his servant unless he knows they can handle it. and i must say, you manage it very well.

HappySurfer said...

I think most people with Thalassemia did not know they have the condition until something happens and test results reveal it. That's what happened to my friend. His doctor told him that people with this condition best not to have children but hey, look, he has two lovely children. And you to, one leng lui.

You're right. Life goes on and I am sure you and your girl are doing just great. Live life, Bananaz, and best wishes!

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Life Ramblings இ tQ for your prayers we will live life to the fullest. Must be skinny then to squeeze thru haha. Yeah now no more issue of couples having the same surname getting married. Have a few friends surname Tan and his daughter also married the Tan's.

London Caller இ Think that car is just the shell no engine or gear box inside. Hahah lorry even worst. tQ

Lily Riani இ Bananaz is a proud 28 year old daddy. Stay young, think young and be young hehe. We the thalassemians will be alright. tQ for the encouragement.

HappySurfer இ Exactly people would not actually know or bothered about it if its a minor or Alpha. So your friends children are OK hope they escaped. Just like my sister she didnt have it but my other bro got it. tQ for the compliment will let Nikki know. We will live life to the fullest thanks for your best wishes.

Netster23 said...

wooo she is beautiful!

Does she blog also? hahahah :p

thats for the great writing Bananaz :) we learn something useful here.

Cheers

Say hi to Nikki ehem! *hi*

Connie said...

Hi Bananaz. I'm sorry to hear your daughter also has this disease, but, yes, as you say life goes on. She is a very pretty girl. I hope you have a nice weekend!

Lrong Lim said...

This is quite a story... wish you and your child good luck and 'strength' to pull through...

jam said...

Sorry to hear about your daughter. Get her prescription for her monthly complication. Hope you and her the best in fighting against the disease.

Pete said...

Wah A4 size hole can slip through....wearing tie some more leh!

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Netster இ tQ nope she's not a blogger. Glad to share and bring the awareness to a higher level. she says 'Hi' haha. Have a great day.

Daisy இ Remember once you posted about blood donation and you had trouble with the needle? Bananaz commented I cant donate blood and this is the reason why. tQ we are coping well.

Lrong இ tQ we will be just fine.

Jam இ tQ for your suggestion nothing much we can do about it no treatment required just have to exercise more and stay healthy.

Pete இ Think almost the same hole size like the ones to Vietnam where you visited the hiding place of the Vietcongs under the ground. Bananaz on biz trip have to be formal haha.

Regina said...

Well interesting the way you wove the genes and surnames and WoMan (smile). I looked up Burt Bacharach and found it really sad that their daughter took her life like that! I also read a forum with comments and differing views in regard to Asperger's syndrom and people who knew Nicky (a pretty name too)-but that it is a form of Autism. I'm more familiar with the latter (friend of mine's son has it) Anyway, I found it errie she used that plastic bag/helium to take her life (wonder if it was the same source --from that elderly lady- feds just raided her business? Anyhow, this was a lot to chew..so I'm gathering (heterozygous) which your daughter
has inherited is from both genes..but this is not the (major) where she would have to deal with transfusions? Sorry if I confused that. Hmm..anyway, wishing you well and for new discoveries to help with this-

Twilight Man said...

Hey BananaZ!!.. Your blogs often cheer up my boring days at work. I am sure that the Chinese folks are so smart since ancient times to calculate the good astrology dates for any events and their beliefs in saying that those with same surnames should not marry is CORRECT AND TRUE. I am too malas to elaborate here since this is just a comment's box only.

I am just curious whether you are a Buddhist, my friend??

eastcoastlife said...

So sorry to hear about the health issues you and your daughter are facing. Wishing you the strength and lots of cheer for the days ahead.

I thought you were a rather young chap, wahhhh.... got such a grown up daughter already. :)

Caroline said...

pray for the best. :D am sure she can do it well in fighting over it. :)

[SK] said...

what an interesting story about MEN and woMEN!! haha, i like that, so we are taking too much off from the woMEN leaving them only those excrutiating MENstrual problems?? :D

[SK] said...

but then again, Bananaz, in chinese actually those ugly words all comes with women in it.. for example: 奸 and 姦.. so it's interesting to know there is always endless fight between the two species??

[SK] said...

ooh, that is so sweet, naming the daughter after the singer of "your songs".. that is such a pretty story when ask why the name.. that's cool.. but avoid the singer who is of the same surname, or else end up having exactly the same name and get teased by classmates, hahahaha!! :D

London Caller said...

The "black sheep" is actually a mutant green one among the pink tulips.

Look carefully, you'll see it. :)

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Regina இ Sad for Burt's daughter to end her life in 2007. If both genes were of same form that would be quite serious. tQ for your well wishes.

Twilight இ OK You fully support no marriages with same surnames. Can share share on your point would like to hear your words of wisdom. Bananaz is a free thinker loves and respect all religions.

EastCoastLife இ Bananaz is forever young hahaha. tQ for the cheers.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Caroline Ng இ Thanks for your prayers will keep healthy.

[SK] இ No fight between the sexes here hahaha just plain English it means to saying cant be equal here. So in Chinese women caused the problems hehe. Yeah hold on the name for 13 years and her classmates teased her name Nikki, knee-key. tQ

London Caller இ Sorry lah bro Bananaz got CVD meaning color blind cant pick out green from the pink tulips. tQ anyway for the hint hehe.

London Caller said...

Colour blind?

Should I call his lucky or unlucky?
In certain countries, I think if you have CVD, you can avoid doing National Service. ;)

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ But then I would call it unlucky no chance to crawl like a commando or shoot a rifle. Love outdoor activities leh. haha

London Caller said...

But then, if you go and and fight in war.
Maybe we won't get this chance to read your blog.
Just be thankful with what we've got lah. :)

Bengbeng said...

i was abt to b admitted to the surgical dept yesterday n the receptionist asked for my particulars. they asked for my religion too... jus like Twilight asked u. i wonder why . perhaps it has to do with the 'right rites' n no confusion or mistakes if the unavoidable happens.

I can only pray for yr daughter n family. for the ability to b able to lead as normal a life as possible with this set of circumstances

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ Things happen for a reason haha.

Bengbeng இ Same thing happened many years back when I did my full medical check up. The hospital receptionist asked for my religion when she saw it was empty in the form but when I said none she was shocked with jaws opened wide like seeing a ghost. She said how can you not have a religion? I said OK just put my religion as "LOVE" now her jaws dropped on the floor.

foongpc said...

Sorry to hear about your daughter's condition. But stay positive! For positivity attracts positivity : )

foongpc said...

Wow! You managed to squeeze through that hole? Amazing!

foongpc said...

>London Caller இ Things happen for a reason haha.

Now that you mentioned it...
Do you really think so?

To me, things do just happen for a reason.
People thought there was a "reason" because they missed out the "truth".

How do you know they world is round?
Because you heard it from books, or some people else told you so. So there's a "reason" to believe what the majority has imposed us to think is right. And this reason is like a pattern, fixed in everybody's mind.
This is just like knowing Barisan Nasional will win the next election. This fixed reason or treason is unreasonable.

Is the world really round not oval?
Can other parties rule Malaysia?
Now, you have to think outside the "reason" for the reason. Then, the truth will reveal itself.

London Caller said...

> things do just happen for a reason.

Should be:
...things DON'T just happen for a reason.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

foongpc இ Am staying positive. Think skinny then no problem to go through. Heard panda also got PANses and PANopause so be careful. tQ

Luciana இ Never crossed my mind that Bananaz got stuck haha but very unlikely me so thin then. But seriously to think 'what if' so how? Its a solid whole tree trunk by itself guess ahve to starve weeks of months then only can be 'released' haha. tQ.

Keats The Sunshine Girl இ At the least we know our base and have to be careful. tQ

London Caller இ Haha fluke shot all wild guesses are correct.tQ.

Casendra இ Its OK with us not much of a problem for minor. Apparently modern doctors say it 'natural' nothing can be done but to keep fit and healthy in case later years when body not that strong then other complications may come in. tQ

Casendra said...

ah ok ok, at least its just minor :)
