இ Random facts V ~ Nothing Left In Right Brain

Our little 'crinkly walnut' brain is a master piece. It is divided in two parts – left & right. In the left nothing is right and in the right nothing is left. There are many brainy schools of thought and myths regarding the left brain right brain. As far as writing is concerned Bananaz uses right hand from day one but left hand on the Chinese abacus and later electronic calculator in order to save time while holding the pen in the right hand. Been wearing my first ever watch on the right hand since younger days and owning two anticlockwise watches currently *dare to be different* whoa. In any cue sports Bananaz does not need the "rake" or "bridge stick" for billiard or snooker game as the cue could be easily switch to the left hand and vice versa.

Bananaz became much bolder in late 90's going against all odds in attempting to 'exercise' the right brain by training the left hand to use chopsticks and writing and also to remind the mind that "Nothing is Impossible" Know what? He did it. Prefer to place the computer mouse on the left but on rotation basis to the right at a regular basis. Ooops! Now comes the confusion. Is Bananaz a right hander or a lefty? If I don't know I don't know, I think I know. If I don't know I know, I think I don't know ~ (Ronald David Laing, psychiatrist 1927-1989).

Done a quiz from Creativity Test and here are the results: Left Brain (54%); Right Brain (46%).

According to research by Amar Klar at the National Cancer Institute ~ "the gene for hand preference might also be the gene for hair whorl direction, the way a person's hair turns on the top of their head. Half of people with counter clockwise whorls prefer their left hand". Oh my! Bananaz's hair whorl direction is counter clockwise. Going further with the Geschwind theory, named after Norman Geschwind, a neurologist, proposed that the presence of high levels of testosterone before birth can lead to a left-handed child. Unfortunately, scientists can't open up someone's brain and see a sign for hand preference, so the myth remains that lefties are more artistic. What remains true is that the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body and vice versa.

A usual mundane conversation transpired during morning breakfast which goes like this..

香蕉人: 有時候我不曉的我是左手是右手? Pinyin: yǒu shí hou wǒ bù xiǎo de wǒ shi zuǒ shǒu shi yòu shǒu?
Bananaz : Sometimes I wonder whether I'm left or right hander?

芒果: 那個不重要; 愛不愛我才重要
Pinyin: mángguǒ ~ nà ge bùzhòngyào ài bù ài wǒ cái zhòngyào.
Mango: That one not important, love no love me only important (lit.)

Oh dear! A classic case of  "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" where by two genders who have diametrically different communication styles, emotional needs and personal values to each other as pointed out by the author of this book, John Gray?

Lefties have long suffered. Eating with the left hand is considered impolite in India, Indonesia and Malaysia. Chinese characters prove extremely difficult to write with the left hand and in the past teachers would slapped the wrists of left-handed students. According to Wikipedia, the Chinese character for "left", 左 depicts a left hand attending to work 工 gōng. In contrast, the character for "right", 右 (Mandarin: yòu) depicts a right hand in relation to the mouth 口 kǒu, suggesting the act of eating. In the olden days in China, the left has been the "bad" side. The adjective "left" 左 pinyin: zuǒ means "improper" or "out of accord". However in one of the Daoist temple one must hold the incense and place them in the urn with the left hand during prayers. According to this Dao, the right hand is "bad" most likely contaminated with evil deeds based on the variety of studies suggest that 10% of world population are left-handed.

Left Brain Teasers:

Because their brains are organised differently, left-handers see and think differently and can get some very different results from various "brain tests", usually doing very well on tests that involve creative thinking or unraveling complex images and manipulating 3D images. Here's a famous test of creativity - have a look at the image below:

A non-creative right handed brain sees only a hodgepodge of disconnected shapes, but the left-handed brain can go beyond logic and find the connecting concept that makes sense of the shapes. If you can't "see" beyond the shapes, it's because your right-handed brain is trying to solve the problem and won't let your left-handed brain have a go. If you still can't see the picture, the answer is at the bottom of this page **

Here's another example showing how your left-handed brain can even create things that don't exist. If you can see the white triangle - the one with its apex pointing up - it's because your left-handed brain has created that triangle to unify what is otherwise simply a collection of angles and PacMan shapes. There is, in fact, no white triangle there.

**The picture in the first brainteaser is of a dog drinking from a stream, with its head in the middle of the picture facing down to the water and its tail off to the right.

Are you aware that August 13 is designated International Lefthanders Day by Lefthanders International who are from 7-10% of the world's population? This myth holds that a right-brain person is generally creative, intuitive, artsy, while a left-brain person is more of a problem-solver, more logical. What do you think? Myth or Fact?

My hubby is a left-handed. :)

lina said...

My hubby would be the left-brain person in the family. He is far more logical in thinking than I am. XD

Reanaclaire said...

I cannot imagine holding a mouse with my left hand...but i guess left handed people also hold their mouse at the right, dont they? ok, i will be more observant next time..

suituapui said...

They say lefties are more intelligent - use both sides of brain...but many end up not very smart as forced to use the right only and get severely punished some more...follow everybody else. That's what I heard, dunno true or not.

MODERN ROBINSON CRUSOE said...

The brain-teaser is nice & in fact right is creative & left brain is logic processing

Pete said...

I kena hentam from my teacher....because I am a lefthander!

wenn said...

well, everyone is special in his/her own way whether he/she is left/right brained.

Isaac Tan said...

thanks for the sharing bananaz! definately learnt a bit more from reading this post.

London Caller said...

My grandma is ambidextrous.

Not truly ambidextrous, she uses her right hand to write, but all other things by her left hand.

One of my aunts is also like that.

Connie said...

Very interesting article, Bananaz. I didn't know that about the hair whorl direction. It's neat that if we try, we can overcome the dominance and teach the other side of our brain to do what it is not accustomed to doing.

yvonne said...

Hehehe... now I know Bananaz is fantasy-oriented, not reality-based.

My twin cousins are trained to be right-handed and left-handed respectively. Maybe their dad thought it was easier to identify them, haha...

Ken Wooi said...

this is informative... i can see the dog in the white and black patchy picture.. but cant see the stream :P

HappySurfer said...

Good info, Bananaz. Thanks.

I think most, if not all of us use both hands to a certain extent. I have a colleague who writes with her right hand but uses the mouse and scissors with her left. As for me, I write and do most things with my right hand but when it comes to picking up small items, my left fingers do a better job.

Here's another way to determine whether you are left- or right-brained and some interesting info on characteristics. Check it out if you are interested.

物以稀为贵(When a thing is scarce it is precious ). Since very young, I knew that lefthanded people are more intelligent. A few classmates of mine who are lefthanded proved it right to me.

London Caller said...

Mutton, beef and smoking? WTF?!
I don’t see the missing link, man.

[SK] said...

i am definitely a right-handed person, but i have not thought of interchanging my left and right hands doing things that my right hand used to do.. maybe it's a good idea like what you've practicing with chopsticks and mouse huh.. it's by default that i will be using right hand, unless maybe i'm holding something else with it, my left hand will be the alternative - most of the time i gave up, and let my left hand hold the things, and right hand do the things, haha~~ :D

[SK] said...

yeah, in ancient chinese, left is inferior and right is superior.. but i have not analyse that's why both words are written that way.. was this the real rational behind, or just by coincidence that you are able to make the explanation?? hahahaha~~ :D

[SK] said...

errr, i don't really see the picture of the dog drinking at the stream.. instead i saw a face on the right, and a troupe of marchers on the top left, haha~~

Autumn Belle said...

I agree with Mango with regards to L or R. Anyway, I'm sure your are her 'Right hand man'. By the way, Hitler was a Leftist (social and politically).

One said...

These are some fun exercises. You must be ambidextrous.

I guess you went into studying the crinkly walnut because of your daughter. I hope there are some alternative healing. I know people who regularly go for blood transfusion do go through a fair bit of suffering. I wish you and your daughter well and happy...

Thank you for your vote. I really appreciate your support

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

lina இ He is left you are RIGHT, you will always win hehe.

reanaclaire இ You cant hold the mouse with your left? Just like Mango too imagine when she uses my lappie when hers is shut down, she crossed her right hand over the left side. Cant tahan that so unplug the mouse and shift to the right, I got no issue on that position.

suituapui இ Heard of that too that's why Bananaz trying to be lefty and now confused muahahaha.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

MRC இ So Bananaz should be inclined to logical thinking.

Pete இ Only on writing you kena whacked but you are free to do others things with your left hand in school and at home. Know you uses scissors with your left what about frying the wok left hand too?

wenn இ Yeah like Mango said left or right not important haha.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Isaac Tan இ Sikit sikit jadi bukit hehe.

London Caller இ We normally uses our two hands but one would be the more prominent hand. Good to have both hands busy than let it idle.

Daisy இ Now the confusion, my quiz results is right handed and my hair whorl direction say other wise haha

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

yvonne இ Oh like it, right on ~ Bananaz is fantasy-oriented, its quite true. Lots of fantasies in the head after watching a movie that is why dont go for ghost movies will think about it 3 days 3 nights.

If its in my place would give my parents havoc switching roles with my twin bro and confuse teachers in school even though one is left hand and the other right hand coz that can be trained muahahaha.

ken இ Not bad at least can see dog but no stream where its mouth is drinking the water. Mango only sees patches.

HappySurfer இ You are right we use both hands but only one is more. Have done your quiz both answers are left.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Sheoh Yan இ Wow tQ learn another Chinese idiom after I check with MDBG dictionary. Great to know you got real life cases to share.

London Caller இ Yeah no link in the three have replied in your post just a coincidence.

[SK] இ It will not be easy to switch using the left hand but will pick up smoothly as time goes by. Now I prefer to use left hand for the chopsticks but if someone is sitting on my left would switch to my right hand provided no one is at my right.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

[SK] இ Sorry lah bro my Chinese is ltd co merely hearsay. Really you see no dog? Tested on Mango and she sees nothing only dots and patches. The face you saw is the right leg of the dog and the marchers at top left is like a round patch.

Autumn Belle இ Very true not important on L or R. Oh Bananaz is her left right man haha.

One இ Maybe a little ambidextrous. tQ for your kind wishes. Its my pleasure keeping my fingers crossed for you. Good luck.

Regina said...

I came here and left on a journey again (smile). OK, I always believed I was right brain (taking the school system into consideration too) but apparently am quite a bit more left. Even the whorl in my hair!! Now I wonder though if age changes the dynamics..for example- discipline or what path you've taken, which may tend to shift things? I'm kind of going by the questions because I would of answered yes to some before, but not now?
I had no idea about the chinese characters being difficult to right with the left..but did understand some hangups about the left and right hand.
One of my sisters is left handed.
Anyway, something to think about..wishing you a terrific weekend-

Regina said...

Oop, (characters difficult to Write with the left) (lol)

lina said...

@Bananazஇ ,
"He is left you are RIGHT, you will always win" - I like your way of thinking. ^^

lina said...

I wish I am ambidextrous. Both hands also can use equally. :)

CH Voon said...

about the mouse, you can do the settings for the left handed people.

it is no problem for left handed people.

CH Voon said...

i think i am using left brain more than right brain gua.

CH Voon said...

yupe correct, i can see the dog picture before i read the answer kekeke i am logical man.

lena said...

a lot of times people say that the left handed people appear to be smarter, not sure how true is it? i dont see anything from the 1st picture until you pointed out that dog.

LifeRamblings said...

It is definitely not easy being a left- hander in a right-handed world.

LifeRamblings said...

my sister is completely left-handed and she is totally proud of being a lefty.

LifeRamblings said...

but my conservative dad find it so abnormal and uncomfortable with it. my sis was even scolded when she was a child, for trying to eat with her left hand. how pathetic!

London Caller said...

Practice makes perfect.
We can actually train ourselves to use both hands.

Recently, BBC just finished a series of programme about human body. One of the episodes did mention about this subject.

Some scenes are very upsetting.
They even filmed a dying man until he had his last breath... I couldn't sleep well after that night!!!

If you YouTube Inside the Human Body, you may be able to find the programme.

Here's the first episode:

Very interesting post... I forced myself to brush my teeth with the left hand... I switch left to right and back when chopping wood... next, shall try the mouse...

Wenny said...

my son's left-handed! whoa, he's definitely different in many ways and he's part of the 7-10% world population. an amateur medium once told me he'll make me famous one day ... i think he has for all the wrong reasons so far but optimistically, for all his greatness soon. please pray for me :)

Bengbeng said...

i am left handed by nature but in the process of growing up was beaten n forced to do many tasks with my right hand. :)

foongpc said...

Lefthanded people are usually smarter and more talented but die younger. Fact or myth? Dunno! : D

foongpc said...

I think it's good to be both right and left hander. It just takes some practice. Music and art will help to train the right brain for those who are overly left-brained : D

London Caller said...

So did you watch it?
Pretty interesting!

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Regina இ Think its more of a preference and convenience in choosing ones hand and read somewhere both sides of the brain work in tandem the left complimenting the right. Yeah tough to write with your left hand eh! haha. Will practise you can do it.

lina இ Ooops your Abang not happy with Bananaz hahaha. Can be train on using both hands try starting today..hehe

CH Voon இ Not on the setting of mouse but placing on the location of mouse either at left or right of the computer. Great you can see the dog drinking water from the stream.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Life Ramblings இ Yes not easy with merely less than 10% of the world's population left handed. Normal household & sports items like knife, scissors, gold & archery would posed a challenge for lefties as they can't borrow from friends. Older folks mostly cant accept lefties. Kesian your sister.

London Caller இ True more practice makes perfect perfect. Thankz for the link on the Human Body not sure Bananaz able to watch the death and sleep peacefully after that haha. Watch a bit of the video clip its great education. tQ.

Lrong இ Haha have tried a few times brushing with left hand but not that smooth. Yeah me too changing hands in doing things like sweeping and moping the floor, cangkul-ing. Yes yes you must try using your left hand on the mouse. Think you will have no problem at all.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Wenny இ Chinese saying first bitter sweet later..whoa sweetness coming your way very soon.

Bengbeng இ Sorry got conservative parents and teachers to have arm twisted and gained control over your left hand. Still OK you are doing great with your right nothing much to lose right?.

foongpc இ Oh then better switch back to using right hand kiasi mah hahaha. Dunno myth or fact woh? On a positive note lifestyle got to play an even important part than left hand muahahaha. Yeah musician uses every left right fingers and feet with ease.

lina said...

@Bananazஇ,
I've been practising using my left hand. Sometimes I make people got interested when I used left hand to write. Usually that's when right hand was holding something. Though my left hand writing is quite ugly. ^^!

Will practise use mouse with left hand. ;p

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ Yes watched all the 4 videos guess should have failed my biology. Didnt know the egg is such a big contrast compared to the sperm haha. Very interesting and very informative about the twins etc thanks a lot. Didnt see the part with the dying moment?

lina இ Oops now everybody is turning lefties. Of course the writing got to be ugly. Either you triple clicked on your mouse of could not get anywhere with it using your left hahaha. Good luck.

London Caller said...

I think that's in the second episode.
There are only 4 episodes in the series.

The dying bit is very upsetting.
I still remember the poor old man having his last breath, then just like that he's gone.
They also explain why human die!

London Caller said...

I found it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hozdsDFrNpY

I hope you can sleep well lah!

jam said...

I can figure out the white triangle in the 2nd picture but nothing from the first picture.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ Whoa watched the 4/4 parts and the last breath was in the part. It seems perfectly OK with me coz Bananaz is aware death is inevitable as to accept with the Chinese saying ~ birth, old age, sickness and death. Something to ponder about when that dying man has little blood cells to keep him fit and will that ever pose a danger to me with thalassemia when my blood count drop further year by year. Thank you very much for the link, great info and learned quite a good lesson in human life especially with pix. How I wish during my schooling days we have pix and videos to help our learning. Bananaz loves reading books with pixz and diagrams and mostly likely to fall asleep with only words.

jam இ So far 3 person cant see the 1st pix just merely patches here and there. That means to say the right and left brain do have some difference in perceiving and recognising things.

Monk said...

i use my left hand to eat and write. but so far no one tell me it's rude to eat with left hand in malaysia =_="

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Monk இ If with chopsticks on the left hand can get away with it easily coz older folks keep one eye open the other closed, but if with 'hands' its not acceptable by many as yet, you know what I mean?

London Caller said...

Oh yes, our organs need oxygen.
Red blood cells carry the oxygen to our body parts.
Unfortunately, cells cannot regenerate like lizard's tail.

>death is inevitable as to accept with the Chinese saying ~ birth, old age, sickness and death.

It's not completely right.
There's one type of jellyfish can live eternally.

i honestly met more lefty being more competent in maths n problem solving. now that you mentioned, i wonder if it's also a myth. very interesting! n i never knew it was rude to eat with your left hand in India n Indonesia. n Msia?

Two of my very good frds are lefties :) I am a right-y though tried sprucing up my writing with left hand when i had fractured my right arm last yr. Allz well now n am back to being right handed again. Interesting post!

Before you reveal the answer of the image, I actually saw a crocodile crawling on a path with tree by the road side, muahahaha! Gues I'm hvg cuckoo brain!

Like this post :)

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ Oh really jelly fish can live eternally? That's interesting news.

levian இ Could it becoz of the minority? haha. If eating with hand then left hand should not be touching the food.

Ever Green Tree இ Namaste! My younger bro got burned while playing with candles on his right hand and since then been a lefty every since even though his right hand recovered.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

But most people I know who are left handed are not even creative....and the right-handed are. My sister is left-handed but she is never been "classified" as creative. I am right handed, and I'd been known as the creative one since even before going to pre-school. I took several tests where they can find out how my thought pattern works, and the tests consistently prove I am creative. My left-handed friend who took the test also, did not come out as creative.
I don;t believe left-handed people are more intelligent. That's not how intelligence is based.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

I Love-Hate America by Bing இ Thanks for the actual examples. Guess it not that true after all for left handed pax to be creative. To come to think of it actually not all musicians, like guitarists are left handed but they can produce the best music. tQ
