இ To Hear, Or Not To Hear

"If I could have only one of my senses then I would choose hearing, Then I wouldn't feel so all alone." ~ Helen Keller

"One third of our life is spent with our eyes closed, because we are asleep. An estimated twenty years. Yet in any second of those twenty years our ears can command our eyes to open and search for the source of a sound. When our eyes are open our ears can hear through walls, and all around where our eyes cannot see and still command our eyes to search for the source of sounds." ~ Jim S. Davis II, BC-HIS, ACA.

So now how important is your hearing? Have it checked.

Any sound above 85 dB (decibel) can cause hearing loss, and the loss is related both to the power of the sound as well as the length of exposure. You know that you are listening to an 85-dB sound if you have to raise your voice to be heard by somebody else. Eight hours of 90-dB sound can cause damage to your ears; any exposure to 140-dB sound causes immediate damage (and causes actual pain). More info HERE.

TELL ME THIS WON'T HAPPEN TO US!!!

Three retirees, each with a hearing loss, were playing golf one fine beautiful day.

One remarked to the other, “Windy, isn't it?”

“No,” the second man replied, “it's Thursday.”

And the third man chimed in, “So am I. Let's have a beer.”

Chinese Idiom: 掩耳盗铃*pinyin:yǎn ěr dào líng [lit. Cover Ear Steal Bell]

 掩 : yǎn *cover* | 耳 : ěr *ear* | 盗 : dào *steal* | 铃 : líng *bell*

A thief sneaked into the house of Fan at night and saw a huge bronze bell hanging in the front yard. Since bronze could fetch him a good price, without hesitation decided to take it back home. However he faced a stiff problem as it was too heavy to be carried away. He then thought of another idea if he could break the bell into pieces that would solved all his transportation problem. With a first strike of his hammer it gave out a loud deafening bang which caught the thief by surprise and shook him terribly by covering his ears with both hands. At this instance he exclaimed "Aha the sound of the bell can not be heard when the ears are covered." He ripped off part of his clothes and scrolled them into two earplugs and stuffed into his ears. Through out the hammering in the middle of the night the banging noise of the bell woke up all the neighbours and he was caught red handed. The foolish man did not know that the only one who could not hear the sound of the bell was himself.

This idiom 掩耳盗铃*pinyin:yǎn ěr dào líng* [To plug one's ears when stealing the bell] is used to satirize those who think they are smart but only deceive themselves. This applies to someone who does bad things and buries his head in the sand trying to pull a fast one in telling the world he is innocent.

"You have to hear what you don't want to hear, to know what you don't want to hear" ~ Dr. Gustav Mueller

To hear, or not to hear.

To hear, but all nonsense.

Not to hear, yet feel very uneasy.

We just cannot choose what to be heard, or what not to be heard.

Reanaclaire said...

To me, I prefer to see than to hear.. I cannot imagine myself in darkness... cos maybe I am scared of pure darkness...

lina said...

I have hearing problem. But luckily I only lost 10% of it.

So sorry if you have to repeat what you said to me. ^^!

lina said...

Having all senses intact is such a gift.

lina said...

Thank you for sharing the story too. :)

I like the Wednesday and thirsty joke.

I heard that you are monkeying around. Halloween not over yet? Twig or treat?

lena said...

now i know why some people talk like " 9 mm tup 8" think they have hearing deficiencies!

Amelia said...

Hi Bananaz, thanks for sharing the jokes. hahahaha... no drink kopi-o now, so can laugh. No need disclaimer today.
I hear what is necessary only, boss nagging pretend not to hear.

If I had to lose one of my senses, I would pick... the sense of smell.

Ha! I love your retiree joke :-)

Tekkaus said...

I prefer losing my hearing rather than my eyesight. :(

Windsmoke. said...

We having a saying down here in OZ and its called "Selective Hearing" and its got nothing to do with hearing loss because when people have this they only hear what they want to hear :-).

suituapui said...

My hearing's ok...but when going clubbing, my eardrums may vibrate...and it can get very uncomfortable. So, no clubbing for me anymore.... Sad.

suituapui said...

My sense of taste is perfect, thank goodness...and smell...as well as to feel. Sight's not so good though - blame it on blogging and hours online. Tsk! Tsk!

suituapui said...

My mum's a bit deaf, dependent on hearing aid. Said it was caused by an overdose of quinine - for curing malaria. Rampant during that pre-Japanese era...

Connie said...

Clever post, Bananaz! I think I'd rather lose my hearing than my vision, but would like to take care of both, of course. Sense of smell would be my choice to lose if I had to pick one.

Thanks for sharing the jokes. A laugh did me good. :-D

I prefer sight cos i love ogling at beautiful..............ditto.

You know bro,i guess sometimes it is best to pretend that we have lost our hearing cos most of the times we only hear rubbish.......even in my family setting,so much trouble and misunderstanding happened because some heard wrongly, then passed on the message wrongly, someone else heard it wrongly, and the end result,is not so nice after all

Unknown said...

Seriously,if i ogle at beautiful .....it makes me feel better than listening to rubbishh

I've got an uncannily accurate sixth sense. LOL.

I am very sensitive to noise. A tiny snoring will wake me up....I hate being disturb when I am asleep

[SK] said...

of course all the 5 senses (or if you also have the 6th sense) are important to us, but i guess sight and hearing are the more important ones..

[SK] said...

and they say, if you have your eyes closed, you can actually "see" by hearing.. that maybe true also.. :)

[SK] said...

oh, i just love the story of 掩耳盗铃*yǎn ěr dào líng* to come with this post.. so your next posts will be on the other senses?? hmmm, maybe for sight will be 視而不見?? smell will be 臭氣熏天?? taste will be 臭味相投?? hehehehe..

Hayley said...

Nice story~

Hearing is as important as other senses... So we really gotto take good care~

Merryn said...

I'm very greedy. I wanna have ALL my senses with me. Dare not think of losing either one of them..

Hmmn... worth to think after this post... true also, world without sounds could be very lonely...just like under the sea...

"You have to hear what you don't want to hear, to know what you don't want to hear" ~~ need more time to digest this :P

Thanks for sharing!

Bananaz,
On the bright side, being rather what we Malay call "pekak badak" can have its advantage. Can not hear (or pretend not hearing) what people are saying. kakaka

haha, what a foolish thief. XD

oh ther are facilities to check our hearing too eh? I will need to check those out pretty soon myself

lina இ: Same like ignorance is bliss haha. Learn a new word today 'pekak badak' tQ.

Isaac Tan இ: Not quite sure about the facility for checking ear but there are instrument to check dB. Those who work in Disco/pubs would have high chances of hearing loss if the job is continuous 8 hr/day for some time.

Autumn Belle said...

I will choose the sense of sight over hearing. I want to be able see all the beauty of the world in this lifetime. I will still make this choise despite the saying, "The best couple is when the husband is deaf and wife is blind", haha. Like what Eugene said, hearsay is really dangerous as it can lead to many misunderstandings. Many people have ears that can hear but do not listen.

Twilight Man said...

I love BananaZ cos you always posted stories of wisdom and not craps like me! Ha ha ha LMAO!

Twilight Man said...

I rather be deaf than blind but I am thankful that I still have both besides seeing ghosts sometimes! Aha!

Twilight Man said...

I am surprised that Suituapui mentioned about his mum's hearing problems resulted from the malaria infected during the Japanese-era.

Twilight Man said...

During the WW2, mum was studying at Chulalongkorn University and Japanese bombed her U to force the Thais to make way for them. She fled by train and the tracks were again bombed along the way. All the students slept in the jungle and many kena malaria overnight. Her comrades had hearing problems later on due to poor medication. I found it hard to believe her stories but now Suituapui is telling a similar tale.

Quay Po Cooks said...

My Quay Lo said my hearing is getting worse, as if he is not! hahah, The pot calling the kettle black. I noticed as I grow older I have this selective hearing problem. I know I am not deaf but I am deaf to things that I am not interested to hear, how ar? I am interested in what you say so I HEAR you LOUD and CLEAR!! LOL!

LifeRamblings said...

my hubby of 16 years is slowly making me deaf due to his loud snores at night.

LifeRamblings said...

it doesn't seem to bother him and he actually sleeps better than me.

LifeRamblings said...

I couldn't bear the thought of losing my sight or my hearing but if i've a choice, i'd rather be deaf than blind.

LifeRamblings said...

Most noises annoy the heck out of me anyway. i'd definitely missed some great music but loosing sight would be too much of a dramatic change.

Very funny the story of the thief and the bell.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Autumn Belle இ: Guess its 100% readers favor sight than hearing. Hubs is deaf & wife is blind makes a perfect couple? Just like the song 'people hearing without listening'.

Twilight Man இ: Your posting is very relevant its a real life experience. In fact we must need all our senses. Sometimes we human cant fight a small little mossie.

Quay Po Cooks இ: Just like the Chinese saying *Ngor hm choot sang hm toy piu ngor hai ah kei* [I didn't say a word is not equal to I'm dumb] so same applies can hear but not saying anything is not deaf hahaha.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Life Ramblings இ: Have tried all measures to reduce hubs snoring? Lately they are selling those clip on the nose etc? Not sure this can help, a person would snore only when he/she sleeps either right or left. Pinch the nose don't allow him to breathe for a while then he would turn to the other side and will not snore for a time being. That's the time you catch up on your sleep and gotta sleep fast before the snore comes back. Good luck. Love the backdrop decor of X-factor

London Caller இ: Those cupcakes were suppose to make you angry haha.

Willie a.k.a Reptoz இ: Mantain and take care all senses they are equally needed and important. tQ
