Strange enough this name 'Ah Long' has been accepted en masse by a wide variety of ethnic groups in Malaysia. WhyAskWhy on the origin of this notorious name for money lender aka Loan Shark come into existence? Hearsay the name originated from Hong Kong where those days the person who loans out money are called Chettiars, who love piercing their ears and wearing big earring.
It is very common for Chinese to replace the middle name with "Ah", so as to be more friendly or closeness? Maybe this should trigger Bananaz to post about in future. Come to think about it all my siblings are of no exception where their last name is after the word "Ah". Some examples will be like 'Ah Soon Fast Food' or 'Ah Fatt Noodles'. Therefore it is not surprising for 'Dai Yee Long' to become Ah Long *啊窿*.
Ah Longs are one of the worst in graffiti with zero skills in spray paint on the walls of the house or property of defaulters. Their only best art is to paint "O$P$" meaning "owe money, pay money". Bananaz is not elaborating on their threat of violence suffered by the borrowers or their family members. You can read more on "Stay Away from Loan Sharks or Being Risk Eaten Alive" from Seniors Aloud.
What is the difference between a Bank and Ah Long?
Some said no difference at all, except that loan sharks are unlicensed and can be imprisoned for what they do, whereas banks can do the same legally. Banks would require some time after the paperwork for approval of loan but its pre-approved almost instantly by Ah Longs. Somebody has said Banks won't break your arms and legs like what the Ah Longs are doing, well they're right instead a bank will break your spirit. Borrowers go to the Banks dealing with sweet elegant customer service officers. Ah Longs come to you with tattoos all over their body. (disclaimer: not every persons with tattoos all over their body are Ah Longs). HERE is a true life story of one blogger who had gone through hell with Ah Long for being a guarantor.
Above is a live performance by Afdlin Shauki aka Chief Kodok & Din Beramboi as guest artistes in AHA2 portraying them selves as 'Along from Bukit Beruntung'. Sorry the video is not very sharp and its in Bahasa Malaysia anyway its basically a comedy show of how Ah Longs solicit for business with no requirement of IRB returns form, Bank's 6 months statements not needed and no guarantor involved. But if you don't pay up chances are the Ah Longs will mutilate your fingers or arm. They ended the song naming the various branches nationwide and the number to call @ 24/7 service ext 12.

Loan sharks have big sharp teeth to best to give 'em a wide birth.
Stay away from those blood suckers!!!! I thought you were going to write about how you were getting ready for bed and your partner exclaimed, "Ahhhh!!!! Longggg!!!!" LOL!!!
Windsmoke இ Yup loan sharks will tear us apart in minutes, stay away from 'em.
suituapui இ Ahhhh Longggg nope sorry bedtime is over haha
I have one big hole earrings like these. lol!
Ah Long is usually wealthy but definitely not healthy. Stay away from them is a bright choice.
Bananaz, I have never heard of Ah Long before now, but I have heard of loan sharks and know they are to be avoided. Interesting story about the earrings and the hole getting bigger just like the debt grows. I always learn something when I read your blog. Hope you have a good day!
Eeee, never engage with them no matter what they promise!
yeah, i have also been wondering why the Loan Sharks are called "Ah Long" 大耳窿.. or perhaps it's not their ring, but their 耳窿 are so big that they can be used to insert enough money?? hahaha~~
hahaha, cool on that statements below, i just love them!!
1. Ah Longs are one of the worst in graffiti with zero skills in spray paint on the walls..
2. What is the difference between a Bank and Ah Long? Some said no difference at all, except that loan sharks are unlicensed..
There is another school of thought though. Ah Longs can be helpful in that one can easily borrow money and get it straightaway and no collateral needed (in most cases I think) but not in the case with the bank.
Money from the bank will take time for it to be in one's hand, plus the loan may not be approved.
Most people who go to an Ah Long usually are in need of immediate funds. However, if one is not prompt on paying back, that's when the trouble starts.
Great fun post, Bananaz! Thanks for sharing.
i dont know such thing but im kinda bothered by that piercing i mean have my own piercing but i never though of having as big as that
This immediately reminded me of the Mursi tribe of Africa. They stretch their mouths!
http://www.vanishingworldphotography.com/mursi-tribe.html
I wonder who's got the worst morals: (investment) bankers or loan sharks ...
I'm glad that when I was a young man needed no ear piercing or face ... is an inconvenience.
Ha ha you know Ah Long friends?
They paid you commission for posting this? ;o)
You sure know how to earn "wai shui"!
What if you post a picture of a shark with ear piercing?
That must be cool!
Thanks for the information on the origin of the name Ah Long! Now only I know haha!
I agree there's no difference between banks and Ah Longs. Both are just as horrible!
But then there are pros and cons in regards to borrowing from bank and from Ah Long.
LOL at the disclaimer "not every persons with tattoos all over their body are Ah Longs)."
Hey hey hey! Back in business huh. Hehe. Ah long has been the pain in the *ss
Ah~~ I also wonder why they are called Along. So the term is derived from HK *Big Ear Hole*
"大耳窿, 大耳窿", and we Chinese like to add "Ah" to the name, making it more warm and friendly. 啊窿 is finally created :)
I see no different between Bank and Along, both are blood sucker like vampire.
But sometimes people can't help but to borrow from Along. They need $ desperately and is not entitled for bank loans, sigh.
Money is not everything, but everything is money. If the problem can be solved using money, then it's not a problem at all~
Ah Long has a bad reputation but people still go to them.
Yan இ So from hot mama to hot Ah Long now hahaha
Daisy இ You have loan sharks in your country as well? Bet they are every where. Glad you learned some a new Malaysian word today. Bananaz has this motto never too old to learn.
Hayley இ They could be 'nice' people to save someone if they are really in need of cash during an emergency but too bad coz of bad publicity.
Wei, wei, not at the stadium kah? Do some blogging first? LOL
[SK] இ Very true have seen pixz of mad people stuffing a can of soft drink through the big ear hole. So the Ah Long would also rolled up the cash and stuff them through their big ear hole. Yes their graffiti are hopeless no art sense but on second thoughts they are actually good at graffiti to create such bad and ugly paint work to disgust the defaulters haha. Sometimes I wonder again always see signs in all banks with the word 'Bank Berlesen' so tak berlesen means Ah Longs?
HappySurfer இ Agree with you the Ah Longs are handy and good in 'helping out' during emergency when someone is truly in need of urgent cash for good use, say to roll the biz for a short term or medical purposes. But sad to say most of the cases are for gambling and other improper use.
MEcoy இ Hey its the trend now wanna be different? haha
Rurousha இ Oh the Mursi tribe how on earth she is gonna enjoy the food *shake head*. Well that's their customs we have to respect and accept what's best for them. There is a saying here that the banks are more than happy to offer you an umbrella when its sunny and blue skies but to retrieve the umbrella when it pours. Sorry no offense to bankers, Bananaz also from financial institution.
Leovi இ Just do it very trendy now with a diamond studded earring looks cool.
London Caller இ Yeah they pay me high commission haha
rainfiled61 இ That's a cool tips. tQ have added your suggestion with the two big ear hole on the shark haha. Have not learn how to photoshop but will.. one day
foongpc இ Seems like Ah Long is 'recognised' name here even TV news never say loan sharks. Got a nephew who has both his two arms full with tattoos and his legs and shoulder as well but he is a goodie boy haha.
Casendra இ Welcome back you leg fully recovered up and running already. Back in what biz? Ah Longs? haha
yvonne இ tQ think have to add that in the 啊窿 to make it more clear why Ah Long. Yalor the SK gang also call you Ah Hua we Chinese like the 'Ah' so much. You no likey the berlesen Ah Long also too haha
lina இ Perhaps they need to have that bad publicity for easy demand of money so that borrowers cannot climb on their heads. Reverse psychology haha.
HappySurfer இ What's going on at the stadium? Sorry blog first haha.
They can be very scary when they turn violent, best not to borrow from them. :(
EastCoastLife இ Of course never ever to be near them keep the furthest distance possible.
Ah Longs are terrifying and heartless.
they may appear friendly at first, but they will quickly trap you into a spiral of debt, before resorting to dirty tactics like extreme violence and threats making you to pay back. i dont understand why many people still like to borrow money from them.
Whoa, your shark truly hits the nail on the head!
Sun fu sai, indeed. Jom, makan!
Hopefully be far away from the sharks.
LifeRamblings இ Stay away from them as if they have plague. Well when people are desperate they can't think straight and also they never thought they could lose in gambling. Sad!
HappySurfer இ It was until rainfiled61 posted his comment then Bananaz modify the pixz. You too sun fu sai at updating the happenings at the stadium. Jom makan
Leovi இ Yeah treat them as though they have plague.
Fun action Afdlin Shauki Kodok and Beramboi alias Din Head
Leovi இ Someone has been 'copied' for our local TV program and posted it on YouTube. No doubt you may not understand a word but the pictures & actions paint a thousand words haha.
oo that is the reason they are called dai yee long ah? LOL..just a few months ago was talking about this topic in SK blog.
Ha ha... do you need kaki to collect money for you, sir?
Small Kucing இ Must have missed the topics in SK's or forgotten already. Some even said its Ah Lung (dragon) which not very close & nothing to do with the 'hole' just sounds like only.
REV JOHN இ Shalom
London Caller இ Do you have tattoos on both arms? Yes then we can talk hahaha
Bananaz, thanks for following up on the HGH. Sounds like a good and popular place for functions.
Yes, I hope to have the Ah Longs far.
Pow char? LOL
Which goes to show how much Malaysians love to travel. But of course, anyone or is it everyone can fly now!
HappySurfer இ Sama sama. When flight is cheap why not. Went to the AA website like too much to chew confused a bit wait wait wait too. Maybe not focus then haha
Leovi இ Keep a mile away from them. Not usre you have Ah Longs in Spain as harmful here?
Check out Pun of the Day. Couldn't be further from the truth and so in sync with your current post.
"A shark can be a dangerous fish, make no bones about it."
LOL
Oh btw, I have a "Purple" quiz for you here on the Auspicious day to start work after Chinese New Year post - in case you missed it.
Cannot wear big earrings......ear can become like Ah Long...
HappySurfer இ Shark has great instinct too lolz Oh have done the Quiz Bananaz smoking on water in Deep Purple haha. tQ
Peteformation இ Better past them to me for safe keeping haha.
Gosh, I just realised the link didn't go to the Friday Frolics site. But you managed to find it? *salute*
HappySurfer இ If there is a will there is a way haha tQ anyway.
Very funny, I love his sense of humor.
I never thought how the name "Ah Long" came from. Now I know after reading yours. I know this word "Ah Long" also from TV drama/movie. For me, if can rather borrow bank than Ah Long. Ah Long is so scary man!
i hope the government will tighten rules making it harder for loan sharks to operate.
Surely doing great meditation to transport you to infinity.
Leovi இ LIfe is too short be merry
Diana Diane Teo இ There is a Singapore movie about the wife being Ah Long bozz who wants to be a nice Ah Long instead. Yeah they are scary.
LifeRamblings இ Hope for the best keeping fingers & toes crossed.
Leovi இ Love to meditate into infinity. Way to go.
Hi Bananaz, I learned something new here re 'Ah Long'. Never thought of it.
Ya, used to see chettiars with umbrellas waiting outside offices old days on paydays for people who outang money. Most chabut back door, ha ha.
This increased when Gentings casino opened. And I know of many who got their car, even homes repo, outang cannot pay. Some masuk hospital too. Same time some loan sharks too got hammered.
I guess there will always be those who live beyond their means....or gambling.
Interesting post.
You have a nice day.
Lee.
Ha ha... No need tattoo also can talk one mah!
Uncle Lee இ Yeah wonder where are the chettiars now have not been seeing them moving around like you just mentioned carrying umbrella with a rattan suit case. Could have merged with Ah Long haha. As you can see in the video they mentioned Bukit Beruntung. That place supposedly to be a gold mine when insider news leaked out that the new airport would be built there. Unfortunately it went to Sepang and since then shoplots, houses & bungalows there were in a slump. People jokingly called it Bukit Takuntung
London Caller இ Do you have Ah Long in London? How do they operate? Not like here put up stickers all over the place at sign board, lamp post etc. haha.
Wow! Bananz, I didn't know you were back online. Nice to see that you are.
Interesting to read about the origin of the name for loan sharks there. For me "loan shark" says it all - BEWARE! :-)
Best thing, save money. Don't even borrow from banks (yet another kind of shark).
Be well, Bonanaz.
Yes, ha ha ha, you only see elephants lately ...
never ever touch a loan shark . . .
last time I think . . . my dad OR my dad friend (probably my dad become garento or what) did borrow some cash from loan shark once, when they come and collect debt (very first time), my dad faster bring him into office and talk to him.
I remember I heard a yelled voice from inside the office then the man ran off in hurry.
lucky nothing happen to my dad . . . and that guy who collect debt seriously looks very gentlemen (from his wearing)
Lastly . . . YAH LOAN SHARK SUX! zz
London sure got Ah Long one!
But they don't put telephone number everywhere for people to contact them.
Here also got pawn shops.
But they take funny things like furniture, mattress etc
like galang guni in Malaysia.
Jamie Dedes இ tQ for dropping by being quite some time already. Yup must not get any where near to them
Leovi இ Being seeing lots of elephants in your masterpieces
Kian Fai Koh இ Glad nothing bad happened to your dad, Your dad must have given him the Bruce Lee's 3 leg kick.
London Caller இ Pawn shops! Came through my mind and wanna blog about it but unable to gather much info why the 'Second Grand Uncle' came into the picture. Any idea?
Ha ha... We say pawn shop in Malaysia.
They say pawnbroker here in UK.
I guess it's to avoid people salah thinking you work in a porn shop if you work in one.
We don't have porn shops in Malaysia, people of course know which pawn shops you refer to, right?
My paradigm needs some shifting, I guess. LOL
Happy weekend, Bananaz!
London Caller இ Alright pawnbroker who makes you broke? haha
HappySurfer இ Sorry was saying on my own personal experience. Not exactly there are some who are not tech savvy would love to receive them through snail mail. For those parents who have young ones would also love to receive a hand drawn birthday card or any special card. On special occasion Bananaz would also enclosed a card together with the present. Happy weekend too HappySurfer!
Yes, I like your eagle. You call yourself Kathos?
dai yi long ah!
Leovi இ That's my dummy blog more for back up and testing
Mr Lonely இ Yes no doubt about it real big ear hole. haha
Long ago I posted My True Story Of Ah Long which can be seen at the side bar of my blog. I had this Tai Kar Chieh who adopted me as her God Son for more than 20 years until I distanced from her as posted in my blog. Through her, I met the whole bunch of her gangs and regular customers who were wealthy wives of tycoons! Strange to hear that wealthy wives need to seek Ah Long's funding. If Bananaz yum cha with me...I can gossip la.
The unknown good side of them are they do very big merits of charity unknown to the world. My father and the late Tan Sri Loh B.S. were the pioneers who built the biggest old folks home in Pg. Almost every week some old ones would pass away, the home will just call a caretaker. He would happily collect the dead body and send for cremation with coffin, prayer rites or whatever simple requests made prior to their deaths to be dressed or whatever.....all borne by the unknown sharks. Normal humans would not offer to donate this funeral rites with no conditions and on infinite terms.
We often hear stories of red paints being splashed and lives being threatened when repayments failed. Nobody ever reported about victims who were good pay masters and treated as VVIPs by the sharks as well. Like you said, it is just like banks without license but they do have Priority Service offered. My rantings could go on for pages but I better stop here as this is just a comments box. LOL
Twilight Man இ That's a real pain in the pocket dealing with Ah Long. Glad all are safe and you gotten rid of them peacefully but painfully over the years. Have linked to your hellish post on your hellish experience. Jom yamcha
