இ 天下第一 No.1

Human(e) Race.. [A few years ago at the Seattle Special Olympics, nice contestants all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with relish to run the race to finish and win. All that is except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back..every one of them. One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story.]

According to snopes.com this story is partly true. This incident happened in a 1976 track and field event held in Spokane, Washington where one contestant did take a tumble and one or two of the other athletes turned back to help the fallen one not everyone in the event. It would be most ideal to be overwhelmed with compassion to turn back without thinking of going for gold in favour of helping a fallen competitor.  Obviously in this real world, life is never kind and not so rosy because majority would be doing their damnedest to aim for Number One be it sports, finances, games etc.

劍~Jiàn (Sword)

Even way back in ancient China where the Swordsman would fight their very best to take on any challenges no matter what it takes, by hook or by crook to be 天下第一劍 [pinyin]:tiān xià dì yī jiàn. 'sky below number one sword' lit. *sky* represents the sky above and *below* for earth, the Chinese way of describing 'World' connecting 'sky+below'. We can only internalise and relate the sword wielding movies of the olden days with a pinch of salt on how genuine it was to go back in time with those men slinging their swords over their shoulders roaming the streets in search of fame and power. With the sophisticated computer graphics software, its unbelievable to see the sword penetrating through the body which looked so real. Unlike those black & white movies shown in the yesteryears of 60's the puzzled and confused Bananaz will often shoot difficult questions to his poor helpless mama. Eg ~ "How come the sword goes under that bad guy's arm pit who shouted loud then can die one?"& "Why after slashing the men, the sword got no blood on it one?"

WhyAskWhy over the years the curious Bananaz, a die-hard fan of swordsman/martial arts movies often baffles over the plot where most filmmakers have something in common. Its just a trivial observation, hopefully the nosey Bananaz is able to stay out of trouble as curiosity killed the cat.

Each time the hero swordsman goes to any restaurant or check-in to Inn how come he has all the money to pay for food, wine and lodging? The wandering swordsman travels without any wrapped around cloth baggage but gets to wear a new set of clothing.

Pants are without pockets and money is in the form of silver nuggets which are tied around the waistband. After all the triple somersaulting, crouching and flying stunts, the silver nuggets are still intact without dropping a single piece. Some movies have improvised slightly with a pouch to contain the silver nuggets secured at the waist band.

Wonder what kind of speed and accuracy for the hero to use his sword to deflect all 20-30 arrows shot at him without being hit by a single arrow? Mama used to say "son Hero must not die one".
The REVENGE factor of 'an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth' inspires the script writers. More than often its the fighting and killing one another to get hold of the martial arts manual to achieve invincible power or fighting over a reputable heavenly sword or dragon sabre to be crowned the indisputable 天下第一劍 [pinyin]: tiān xià dì yī jiàn 'World Number One Sword'.

Ya...this modern day and age, don't fall down. The crowd will just step on you and walk over you... Nobody cares about others anymore...

I saw a whole lot of those movies...and the kung fu ones too when I was young. Shaw Brothers, no less.

Hayley said...

I don't like this kinda movies/dramas one.. I mean all those with swords or history, boring.... :p

Small Kucing said...

I like the martial art drama too but long time didnt watch..

Hahaha but when watching Tarak really thing where they tie the gold and silver la.but one thing for sure...they no need to wash and iron their clothing punya. Will remain clean and like brand new even though travelled through several cities ...fly here and there up the trees and roofs :p

reana claire said...

David Chiang, Ti Lung.. Geok Hwa.. hahahaa.. those swordsmen of the 1970s... the storyline normally very simple and yet those days, I was so fascinated of these swordfighting movies.. But now? Don't waste my time.. hahaha...

Bananazஇ said...

Wenn இ If Hero dies the movie will end, but not in this present era. Hero can die but they 'remake' the story like in a dream or flashback

小影 இ tQ for dropping by. Gimme 5

Cloudia இ Aloha

Bananazஇ said...

suituapui இ Yeah love those movies from Shaw Brothers especially movies directed by the late Chang Cheh

Hayley இ The story line are almost the same talking about revenge but Bananaz loves their graphics

Small Kucing இ Love to watch the movie "Hero" Jet Li vz Donnie Yen. This fighting scene has captivated me with the sound of dripping water & clashing of sword.

reana claire இ Yeah those days David Chiang & Ti Lung, Wang Yi were the super heroes. Of course you don't have time for the Uncles haha

MEcoy said...

sword fighting are just the best form my killing, haha i mean it was the coolest when it comes to movies!
I dreamed of trying such once haha

Rurousha said...

I love Chinese martial arts movies with heroes and swords and dragons flying through bamboo forests!

Everything and everybody are always so impossibly beautiful.

Ah, well, as they say: reality is for those who can't cope with fantasy! :D

Bananazஇ said...

MEcoy இ Please killing in your dream is OK haha.

Rurousha இ Flying over 10 feet wall is like jumping over a 3 feet fence and some even fly like Man of Steel. Very true full of fantasy and wild imagination by the directors with no reality and that's what movies are all about.

lina said...

Bananaz observation are funny and yet... TRUE!

Mr Lonely said...

lol, the girl in the movie was beautiful~

HappySurfer said...

Astro is rerunning a lot of these. Makes me laugh at those colourful (disco) lights in ancient caves and such.

I saw Wong Fei Hoong last night - not sure which Astro channel - and it was entertaining though rather violent as most Chinese kungfu movies are. Jet Li looked so cute then. hehe..

HappySurfer said...

That must have been a touching scene for those who witnessed it, esp for the family of the one who stumbled. Thanks for sharing the lovely story, Bananaz. *Like*

Twilight Man said...

I like the way you analyze everything you saw in life - in details like a curious cat.

I was also a great fan of the old Chinese movies like those sword fightings and even Taiwanese love stories by Chin Han and Chen Chen. I even watched those movies alone when I was in secondary school as my friends were not interested in bitter love dramas!

Finally in 1997 my ex boss Canto Rap Singer Got Man Fai arranged for my office staff to visit TVB studios at Clearwater Bay to watch the real actors flying and clashing with swords! It was an eye opener to me. I have just few photos to blog it if Bananaz is keen to hear.

Leovi said...

I love this story! But in life if you fall those ahead are forgotten and those who come after you trample!

foongpc said...

LOL at all your observations! : D

foongpc said...

Hero must not die? I thought a person only becomes a hero once he dies hahaha!

Bananazஇ said...

Lina இ Sometimes too kaypo is not 'healthy' haha

Mr Lonely இ Girls over swords huh, yeah they are beautiful

HappySurfer இ Disco light in cave lolz. Always curious those days when matches were not invented how on earth they able to start a camp fire in the forest or in the cave? The children race is very touching how many can do such sacrifice?

Bananazஇ said...

Twilight Man இ Hope the cat survives the curiosity. Yeah pleaze share your experience in HKG studio love to see the 'real' thing.

London Caller இ so young learned how to con people haha. Nowadays kids so lucky got special & nicer swords.

Jamie Dedes இ tQ sorry MIA for sometime will try to be active again

EastCoastLife இ Handsome ones are uncles now haha

rainfield61 இ Your camera is your sword.

Leovi இ Real life is so unkind

Bananazஇ said...

foongpc இ If hero dies no syiok already haha, but the filmmakers now are so smart to turn the picture around showing the hero died and then showed flash back haha

martial arts movies are so amazing to watch. i love the acrobatic moves, awesome battle scenes and great story lines.

LifeRamblings said...

The Karate Kid is one of my favourites. each move inspires me.

LifeRamblings said...

I enjoyed Ip man too. i love the rippling muscles of those handsome hunks.

Bananazஇ said...

LifeRamblings இ Martial arts movies have evolved tremendously with CGI in making things look so real. Even those superstars without any basic kungfu skills would fight like a black belt holder.

Uncle Lee said...

Hi Bananaz, I love this posting, and yes, often when the odds are against you, there will be people who will lend a helping hand or shoulder.
And hands that help are Holier than lips that pray.
Often there'll be those who in spite of the danger will jump in without thinking twice to save a fellow man....

You have a nice day.
Lee.

London Caller said...

Ha ha no choice mah.
You know this world can be really cruel.
Only the fittest can survive, so must lie lah.

cre8tone said...

multi sword power...

Bananazஇ said...

Lee இ However the world is getting crazy lots of people have the kiasu-ness in them.

London Caller இ Think I was less than 6-7 years old then, wanted so badly and desperately to own a QuanKung wooden sword in New World Park in Penang but Papa turned down with a flat NO. That incident was embedded in me until today thus I make sure I give all the best to my daughter of course within reasonable means.

cre8tone இ they often say live by the sword die by the sword haha

Somewhere in Singapore said...

Have add you into my reading list, hope you don't mind...

Bananazஇ said...

Leovi இ Only in your childhood, what about now? Bananaz still watching the old and the new CGI swords movies and would shake head when comparing how they 'fly' or stab someone with their sword, so unreal haha.

Somewhere in Singapore இ Hi good morning, no sweat. Have updated my blog list too.

Autumn Belle said...

I always wonder how the hero avoided all the flying darts and daggers and wounds heal with magic powders and pills and hero bears all the pain without anaesthetic. Also how they counted the money in silver and teals. But hey, the main actors were always the invincible heroes, righteous and the good guys always managed to avenge the bad ones. The soldiers or "tele-fele" always spring up after they die and they come alive and die again in the same scene. I love to watch them exchanging blows and die and wake up and die...and after so many deaths, hero don't go to jail. He also get the pretty heroine. Like grandma used to say, that is in the movies!

London Caller said...

Nice ah like that. Your daughter wants the stars from the sky, you will also pluck them for her like that.

I don't understand Wong Ka Seng joke lah.
Am I not Chinese enough?
Or French enough huh?
Explain leh.

Bananazஇ said...

Autumn Belle இ When we were small we often say 'choe hee siao, kua hee kong kum liao' in Hokkien ;(. 'movie actors crazy, movie goers more crazy'

London Caller இ Ooops my joke fell flat. The Chinaman thought that Frenchman is saying his name is 'bon appetit' so he also say his name 'Wong Ka Seng' who have not heard of bon appetit before in his life.

Leovi said...

Well, also in Western movies feel the same, even horse fall without hat or drop them never uncombed!

MiChi said...

it's just a show... suppose to be exaggerate... StarWars can talk in the outerspace, how sound can travel in vacuum? haha... all fake one la

Leovi said...

Yes, Superman also stops bullets with his hands.

Twilight Man said...

Woiii...I thought I saw a banana crawling on this blog! Oh no it was a maggot crawling! !! Help!!!

Are you waiting for sun to rise from the West?

Bananazஇ said...

Leovi இ Movies can be so unreal and over the limit

MiChi இ Yup exaggerated in most movies but the movie goers like it that way and nobody questioned about it hehe.

Twilight Man இ Taikor quite busy with work wanted to have updates but was interrupted often. Am aware my seat already heated up can smell the fire haha.

Bananazஇ said...

Twilight Man இ Kindly bear with the retarded old & ripening Bananaz he gotta slow slow come not able to think and type fast.
