இ Random facts III ~ Blue or Red Pill¿

The Matrix
As Morpheus says to Neo, “This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.” It’s time to take the red pill and continue reading..

The above is one of the famous quotes in the movie 'The Matrix'. Unfortunately just too bad Bananaz cannot be the 'chosen one' for the most obvious reason he picked the wrong pill. Moment of Truth ~ Bananaz is colour blind or a more precise term is colour vision deficiency (CVD). According to Wikipedia ~ "Colour blindness or colour vision deficiency is the decreased ability to perceive differences between some of the colors that others can distinguish. It is most often of genetic nature, but may also occur because of some eye, nerve, or brain damage, or exposure to certain chemicals."

Example of an Ishihara color test plate. The numeral "74" should be clearly visible to viewers with normal color vision. Viewers with dichromacy or anomalous trichromacy may read it as "21", and viewers with achromatopsia may not see numbers. Source: Wikipedia

During our very first meet up with bloggers up north in April 02 2011, Eugene commented that Bananaz is so fit but wait till Bananaz peel off the skin then shall see all the holes & flaws inside. Here are some of the ugly experiences Bananaz faced with blogging, starting with Reanaclaire when she posted 'My Saree And Sari'. Bananaz can only remain mum on which is a nicer colour for the red or glowing green sari?. Huh oh no! Which is red and which is green both looked like black? Then Mei Teng posted 'Just Chilliing Out Part 2' with her pale yellow gecko huhhhhh! Bananaz could not think of any colour for the gecko. Our foodie Pete gave us some tips how to 'How to Choose (select) Nice, Sweet, Ripe, Juicy and Tasty Watermelon'. Bananaz flunk the test and can only do one test out of the four ie the thump (knock) test. Sorry before proceeding further Bananaz got a confession to make regarding how 'Bananaz' got its name about being yellow from the outside and white inside? Actually Bananaz does not even know he is yellow just read and heard about it thus assumed the skin is yellow and when Annie Q posted 'Brown and Peach' that confused Bananaz even further with more complication of colours.

At this juncture we have to be very careful with Chinese words for colour blindness which is 色盲 *sè máng* sounds very close to lecher 色狼 *sè láng* lit. means colour wolf. The Chinese word 色*sè* colour has a dual meaning colour or sex. Like I mentioned before beware of the knife on the word 色*sè* [here] that Chinese talk about 'yellow' colour for pornography where else English uses 'blue'. No wonder with all the confusion and blindness Bananaz is at a total lost.

Special thanks to colorvisiontesting.com
Have a go on the colour vision test with three pictures of which Bananaz could not see anything at all other than the multiple dots of various unknown colours. Its the blind leading the blind and would appreciate it very much if you could tell me what you see from the pictures. More test can be done [HERE] and [HERE].

By now quite a few would be thinking how on earth Bananaz survived all these years? Let's rewind the clock to take a trip back memory lane. Bananaz was not aware of his colour blindness until the mastermind board game during his teens brought up the issue that he was accused of cheating in the game and then only realised of his colour deficiency as the rest is history. What a joke! A colour blind Bananaz playing a mastermind colour game no wonder why he never win a single game at all. During the snooker craze in the late 80's Bananaz often had a wrong cue shot of the brown and red ball. Need to ask opponent where is the brown and red balls across the snooker table. Sick of wearing only whites to office made a bold move to have various colour shirts but must write inside the collar the colour of each shirt. Can remember vividly one incident where one colleague was so agitated with my colour combination,  a maroon shirt with dark black dotted tie during the presentation. She walked right to my face outside the conference room and blasted at me and said "For goodness sake please don't you ever wear that green tie with your maroon shirt anymore". Oh dear! Green??? Bananaz will occasionally not seeing colours with the eyes but with his mind. Wow so profound? How?

Hot Bananaz in chilly red?
We learned from school, sky and sea are blue, maple leaf is red, most other leaves and trees are green, chilly is red just like hot Bananaz pix or the post office mail box in front of any post office. Even the song lyrics goes like this ~ 'Roses are red my love violets are blue..' Well Bananaz just need to increase his RAM to memorise all these colours and not actually seeing them crystal clear. Another blunder happened in one company seafood dinner in Klang when the enthusiastic Bananaz asking around the table who wants red chillies when actually its green chillies oh oh..Ever since then my CEO often walked past me teasing why am I wearing purple socks.  The major frustration Bananaz would faced in the everyday living is when asking for direction over the phone when meeting up with clients. More than often the receiver tells you what colour house, gate or building you should look out for. Thanks to GPS no more colourful torturing. Have you ever had this experience when ordering your food from a hawker stall in a coffee shop and it took much longer than expected? Overheard a conversation of d'bozz and his assistance arguing on the customer wearing a red shirt and his assistance just cannot locate and had taken the food for a joy ride going in circles. From my personal experience either d'bozz is colour blind or his assistance or both. Apparently majority of men would suffer from colour blindness and the ladies, you are saved.

Oh how I love and really at ease to read Globetrotter's post about how freely the people in Japan would dress regardless of colours. She wrote 'I will wear an orange tight with green jacket if I LIKE IT! And no one judge you on this. Love the SELF-CONFIDENCE!'

This year the Rabbit will be having a double celebration in Year of the Rabbit 兔tù and Easter 兔tù-gether. HAPPY EASTER!

இ Random facts II ~ Have Wheels Will Travel

Meichun Jones aka Jeannie
First and foremost my special gratitude to my lǎoshī Jeannie who has been instrumental in getting Bananaz fired up with the creation of this blog, learning Chinese the hearsay way. The saying goes when the student is ready the sifu will appear and what a perfect timing with conditions ripening. Also to my dear soulmate Mango aka KF for all her kind assistance in reconfirming my thoughts and choices of words and Chinese spelling. Not forgetting, Bananaz would not have done it without the introduction by Jeannie, this ever ready silent professor MDBG to stand by me 24/7.

The Wheels of Life
Life is impermanent and death is certain. They say there are two things you cannot escape in life 1. Death 2. Taxes. (BTW just a friendly reminder have you submitted your income return to IRB?) The old Chinese saying 生老病死 *shēng lǎo bìngsì* birth, old age, sickness and death is an inevitable cycle 人生必經之路 *rén shēng bì jīng zhīlù* a path where all of us will have to go through. Thanks to [SK], my scriptease sifu for reminding me to include this and for sharing the wonders of scripteasing below.

There is this little boy who went for a movie and after the movie has been thinking over it three days three nights 三天三夜 *sān tiān sān yè* so obsessed with what he saw and prayed that his dream comes true as in that caper film. It is about a team of thieves who plan to steal gold bullion weighing 3200 kg and escape in their trio of Mini Cooper S. The heist plan calls for hacking the computerised traffic control crippling the system, paralyzing the traffic. Three Mini Cooper Ss, maneuvering superbly in the gridlock through sewer pipes in an action packed high speed chase. Okay okay please don't get me wrong, Bananaz is not talking about planning a heist but just cannot let go of the thought that one day he would be driving his very own Mini Cooper.

By now you guys would roughly know the title of this movie - its 'The Italian Job' (1969) with a remake later in 2003 using the same name 'The Italian Job' (2003) is set in Los Angeles and stars Mark Wahlberg. Ain't the three Mini Coopers awesome?

Make a wild guess what's Bananaz first dream car, sorry folks no prize for guessing ..

இ Random facts I ~ The Beginning 人之初

Image courtesy of KidsHealth
This would be the very first part of the 7 random facts of Bananaz..

When I was small and banana trees were tall I used to sleep while others used to blog. As babies we slept through more than averagely 16 hours per day. Many new moms and dads are questioning how long the newborn baby should sleep. Should the newborn needs more sleep or to feed more frequently? Can check some of the answers here. Many pediatricians recommend that a parent not let a newborn sleep too long without feeding.

Just look at the baby so cute, peaceful, pure and innocent. The old Chinese saying..人之初,性本善  rén zhī chū, xìng běn shàn *lit. man of beginning, character originally virtous*. The six words comprises of the two Three character classic 三字經  sānzìjīng dated way back to the 13th century consisting of Confucian tenets in lines of 3 characters. They say to learn to be good takes three years but with merely three days can make you turn bad. Since touching on the subject of Confucius 孔子 pinyin: Kǒngzǐ, just wonder during that time the students then do not suffer from any stiff neck at all. Why? Perhaps the video below could give you the clue.

I was supposedly be doing the same thing rotating my head in one of the Chinese medium school but with one stroke of the pen, transformed me into Bananaz after I got uprooted from the registrar which changed my destiny and my whole life completely. Could it be better or may be worst if I was not uprooted to English school remains a one million $ question? My Papa bought the idea from his buddy to transfer me to English medium school so that I could be of great assistance to his business where all correspondence were in English then and that seemed like a brilliant and perfect decision and the rest is history. Nevertheless have to learn and pick up Chinese the harder way keeping my ears wide open at the least no need to *steal listening* 偷聽 tōutīng  eavesdrop to my elder sister as she would read aloud where you can hear her half a mile 100 feet away shouting her lungs out 客人來看爸爸 kè rén lái kàn bàbà... ;  小小狗玩皮球 xiǎo xiǎo gǒu wán pí qiú... and many many more..

ക WhyAskWhy¿ (9) ~ SEVENs

Thanks to Jingle for the 'Versatile Award' to tell 7 random facts about yourself and also to Mariuca for the 'Stylish Blogger Award' to share 7 things about yourself. Sorry for the delay to recollect my thoughts to fulfil the requirements. Could not take it any longer as the guilt has been haunting and bugging Bananaz for quite some time. A blessing in disguise that the tags gave me the inspiration to share 7 Good, Bad & Ugly of Bananaz into seven separate posts. Will have to wait for my next post before I can embark and begin to peel off the 7 yellow skins after I get over with this SEVEN thingy. Why*Ask*Why the significance of this number 7 is so common in fairy tales, advertisements, trade marks, various religions, folklore and casinos etc.

Why does this recurring #7 so magical and mystical to be selected and obsessed by so many? To kick off shall start with The 7 colors of the Rainbow ~ Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet famously abbreviated as 'vibgyor' or the mnemonic “Roy G. Biv.” To keep the ball rolling there is this 7-UP; 7 Eleven; 7 Dwarfs; 7 Seas ~ The Arctic and Antarctic, North & South Pacific, North & South Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean; 7 classical planets ~ the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn; 7 chakras ~ Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye & Crown; 7 cardinal sins ~ pride, avarice, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth; 7 wonders of the natural/ancient World; 7 basic musical notes do-re-me-fa-so-la-ti; 7 days a week; 7 heavens; 7 directions ~ north, south, east, west, up, down and center; 7 spot ladybird; 7 ~ the neutral pH value between acidity and alkalinity; 777 Jackpot and lastly the often over used lame excuses, the 7-year Itch (probably there are more but will have to stop here else its never ending).

Bananaz is typing and scratching the head trying to figure out how and why the #7 gets all the limelight shinning radiantly head and shoulders above the rest? Could it be based on science and technology or superstition or because 7 is the most spiritual of all numbers and considered most 'lucky' that's why they used 777 for jackpots? It beats me, your guess is just as good as mine. Anyone to throw in some light please?

Now what will the Chinese people got to say about #7七 in their very own way? Heard of 7 early 8 early? 七早qī zǎo 八早 bā zǎo, cracking up your brains early in the morning hey! Here you go:
1. 七情qīqíng  : 7 effects of traditional Chinese medical theory and therapy ~ joy 喜xǐ, anger 怒nù, anxiety憂yōu, thought 思sī, grief 悲bēi, fear 恐kǒng, fright 驚jīng;

2. 七方qīfāng : 7 kinds of Chinese medicine prescriptions 大方dàfāng, 小方xiǎofāng, 缓方huǎnfāng, 急方jífāng, 奇方qífāng, 偶方ǒufāng and 重方chóng fāng or 複方fùfāng;

3. 亂七八糟 luàn qī bā zāo : everything in disorder (idiom);

4. 七上八下qī shàng bā xià : perturbed state of mind (idiom);

5. 七仙女qī xiān nǚ : seven fairies

6. 七七八八qīqī bābā : 7788 ~ Its our slang for 'almost complete' or 'near completion'. To make it a complete 7 have to add one more which is quite timely with 清明節 QīngMíngjié (lit. pure brightness or tomb-sweeping) festival, beginning of April in China, September in Japan in relation with souls.

7. 七七 qīqī : (seven sevens equals 49), a Daoist services for the auspicious reincarnation of the departed. Chinese of the Daoism faith believed in 三魂sānhún three (immortal souls) and 七魄qīpò (seven mortal forms). So both these four words will go together forming 三魂七魄sānhúnqīpò. It is believed that when a person dies his/her soul would return on the 7th day. Special prayers and chanting will be conducted every week until seven sevens ie 49 days then all prayers and chanting will come to an end and that the soul has reincarnated. Strangely enough both these two Chinese words 魂hún & 魂pò have got a radical ghost 鬼guǐ in each word. o.O

இ Hair Combing Ceremony 上頭

Image courtesy of Uncyclopedia.wikia.com
Traditionally an auspicious time will be chosen to perform the Hair Raising Combing Ceremony 上頭 [ shàngtou, pinyin, lit. 'Up Head'], a ritual conducted at the residence of the bride and the groom respectively which is normally scheduled closed to mid-night on the eve of the wedding day. Before the ritual begins, both the bride and groom should bath with water infused with pomelo leaves (Chinese believed that pomelo leaves will cleanse the body and ward off evil spirit) and put on brand new underwear and pajamas. In response to [SK] post Bananaz has commented that its once in a lifetime affair which is sort of mandatory in the past (not too sure about the latest Y Generation) for the newly weds wearing pajamas or pyjamas. The bride will usually dress in pink or red pajama (red is the lucky color for festive occasions, especially for Chinese). The head of both bride and groom will be comb three times by their parents both holding the comb together reciting positive words with auspicious meaning during each stroke.

Video courtesy of www.shaolin.org

Hair Combing Ceremony with the three auspicious strokes as below:

1. 一梳梳到尾 ~ yī shū shū dào wěi (Pinyin) / yat1 so1 so1 dou3 mei5 (Cantonese)
lit. First comb to comb until the end [meaning ever lasting love].

2. 二梳梳到白发齐眉 ~ èr shū shū dào bái fà qí méi (Pinyin) / yi6 so1 so1 dou3 baak6 faat3 chai4 mei4 (Cantonese)
lit. Second comb to comb till until white hair all equal [meaning to bring love and respect till old age].

3. 三梳梳到兒孫满堂 ~ sān shū shū dào ér sūn mǎn táng (Pinyin) / saam1 so1 so1 dou3 ngai4 syun1 mun5 tong5 (Cantonese)
lit. Third comb to wish for lots of children and grandchildren.

This whole Hair Combing Ceremony symbolizes the coming-of-age of the bride and the groom thus claiming them man and woman and no longer boy and girl. This would explain why most Chinese parents only consider their children grown ups when they get married.

Mummythree 林峰山
In almost all Chinese wedding ceremony there is one outstanding and conspicuous figure besides the bride and groom. Guess who? Its none other than the 'wedding organiser' better known as 大妗姐 daai6 kam5 je2 (Cantonese) who would usually the wife of the mother's brother taking up the role back in the ancient days. But as time goes by it became a highly professional job which requires the gift of the gab and well versed with rhyming poems.

All along for many generations the job has been dominated by only women but of late during the last wedding function Bananaz was struck with an overwhelming shocking amazement to discover the 大妗姐 is actually a "He" whom we addressed in Cantonese as 大妗爷 daai6 kam5 ye4 (grandpa wedding organiser). Phew! My goodness it was beyond my wildest dream for men to have a break through into this profession and not only that they are doing pretty well gaining popularity with bookings one year ahead. For those who are planning their wedding soon or curious to know what a man is doing in a woman's world can check this out at Mummythree. Heard his professional fees is not going cheap for he can sing, dance, do magic shows and more like an entertainer. He is positioning himself with his very own trade mark donning his 'uniform' in a typical ancient colorful 大妗姐 attire with head gear and red Chinese wooden clogs. Looks kinda cool.
