இ Happy Dōng Zhì (冬至) or Winter Solstice Festival

Image courtesy of Wikipedia A bowl of tāng yuán 湯圓 The Dōng Zhì (冬至) lit. *winter arrive* (quite mouthful for me to pronounce zzzzhiiii) is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by the Chinese and many other East Asian nations. Thought Bananaz would not wanna touch on the subject of I-Ching after so much confusion then again somehow it relates back to the concept of Yin and Yang philosophy of balance and harmony, significantly symbolized by the I-Ching hexagram fù (復), "Returning".  Dōng Zhì (冬至) solar term (winter solstice) corresponds to the 22nd of the 24 solar terms 二十四節氣 where the sunshine is usually at its weakest...

இ The Absolute..一頭霧水

Gotta go easy after my last entry on the I- Ching has caused perplexity to majority thus created '一頭霧水' [yī tóu wù shuǐ] *one head mist water* literally means 'to be baffled' or most commonly known E=mc² ~ "mung cha cha" in Cantonese ie 'blur blur' reflecting the pix on the right. Hope this post should be easy to comprehend about the Absolute which is the combination of oneness of Yin and Yang. {If still E=mc² sorry, would suggest a fast forward to the next paragraph relax and have fun with [SEM]}. All things or events are the result of Yin and Yang hence it can be considered part of the Absolute. Up above the totality of the planets, stars,...

இ The I Ching 易經 Yìjīng

The I Ching (Classic of Changes or Book of Changes), also known as the Yi Jing, Yijing, or I Ging. "I" 易 (yì) used as an adjective, means "easy" or "simple", whilst as a verb it indicates "change" or "the exchange or substitution of one thing for another". "Ching" 經 (jīng) here means "classic works". The symbols used are one of the oldest form of divination over 5000 years old. Also known as the Zhou Yi周易, and has certainly come a long way in achieving a dominant influence in Chinese culture inspiring famous thinkers, scientists, mathematicians and philosophers like Lao Zi and Confucius to name a few. Even until this current millennium the...

இ Pretty Taxing Poem..

A buddy friend from Sydney sent me an interesting email with a pretty taxing poem about the awful truth DownUnder. Rhymes well, short and sweet. Poor ole donkey taxed to the very limit and they truly squeezed every ounce of sweat out with the heavy load. My oh my! . Tax his land, Tax his bed, Tax the table At which he's fed. Tax his work, Tax his pay, He works for peanuts Anyway! Tax his cow, Tax his goat, Tax his pants, Tax his coat. Tax his tobacco, Tax his drink, Tax him if he Tries to think.. Tax his car, Tax his gas, Find other ways To tax his ass. Tax all he has Then let him know That you won't be done Till he has no dough. When he...

இ ALWAYS ASK, NEVER ASSUME!!!

His request approved, the XYZ News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go'. The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, 'Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.' 'Why?' asked the pilot. 'Because I'm a photographer for XYZ' , he responded,...

இ Three Poisons/Three Evil Roots

Sorry folks still harping on the threesome, trilogy or naughty 3some seems cannot get over with it. Greed, anger and ignorance are called the Three Poisons or Three Evil Roots, which are the primary source of all evil deeds. It is the Three Poisons that create all bad Karma, resulting all kinds of suffering in accordance with the Principle of Cause and Effect. What is GREED? Definition of Greed: is an excessive desire to possess wealth or goods; Greed (Latin, avaritia), also known as avarice or covetousness, is, like lust and gluttony, a sin of excess. Greed is inappropriate expectation. However, greed is applied to a very excessive or rapacious...

இ Sportsman's Double

Last post Bananaz mentioned about 'threesome' whereby three words joined together to form another new word or  threesome could have another meaning.  Anyway this is a 3some naughty joke from my email recently.. I ended up with an older woman at a club last night. She looked pretty good for a 60-year-old.In fact she wasn't too bad at all, and I found myselfthinking that she probably had a hot daughter. We drank a bit (well more than a bit), we had a snuggle, and she asked me if I ever had a "Sportsman's Double?"."What's that?" I asked."It's a mother daughter threesome", she said."Oh" I said as my mind began to embrace the idea."No, I...

இ Threesome..

Last post Bananaz blogged about stacking or joining two Chinese words together to form a new word. Now how about increasing the combination to threesome? What happens when three of the same words stacked together with the same word on two identical twin words? Here we go Ladies first.. Wonder why they dare not put three men together afraid they will create havoc? However  the simplified version 奸 [jiān] has gotten rid of the two ladies hoping one lady cannot be too mischievious [just kidding]. When three cars 轟 [hōng] collide head on you would expect an explosive bing bang boom. A piece of wood 木[mù] from...

இ TWO in ONE..

歪 wāi ~ This word alone in Chinese stands for 'Crooked or Askew'. It is a combination of two words placed one on top of each other with [not] 不bù  + [straight] 正zhèng  thus the word ~ 歪 wāi [crooked]. There is a saying in Chinese 上梁不正下梁歪 shàng liáng bù zhèng xià liáng wāi literally means "when the top is not straight the bottom will become crooked". This is more inclined to negativity, often applied to a lousy head of a family, bad administrative corporation or to a country with rotten corrupted top guns. Saw this word while watching "Justice Pao" on TV2 where the prisoners were wearing this word 囚 qiú meaning [prisoner] on...

ക WhyAskWhy¿ (6) Threes & Sixes

Here are some most popular idioms that we used to hear which involves 'threes' and 'sixes'. *WhyAskWhy* threes (3) & sixes (6)? For all you know accordingly some are just imaginary numbers and Bananaz picked on the three most frequently used sayings where they are often said in movies or in our everyday life.  [i]. 三口六面 sān kǒu liù miàn [lit. 3 mouths 6 faces] In most cases to clear of some misunderstanding it is often to sit down among three parties where three (3) mouths and 'the left + right' = two faces to become six (6) faces. It is not necessarily be 3 person, the most sensible approach is for the parties involved to explain all...
