ക Zàijiàn 再見 Farewell 'Banana' Panda ~ Tai Shan

Tai Shan 泰山 {Tài Shān}, aka Butterstick because of its size like a stick of butter just after his birth as described by a zoo worker. He is a giant panda born at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park (National Zoo) in Washington, D.C on July 9, 2005 at 3:41 AM. The name Tai Shan, meaning "peaceful mountain," was chosen after it won 44 percent of the 202,045 total votes cast.

According to Wikipedia as per the agreement with China, the Chinese government can require that Tai Shan be sent to China any time after he turns 2 as he, like his parents, is the property of China. (His parents Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are technically being "leased" to the National Zoo by the Chinese government in a ten-year, $10 million agreement, with the money to go to panda conservation research in China.) The National Zoo announced in April 2007 that it reached an agreement with the Chinese government to let Tai Shan remain at the National Zoo until at least July 2009.

Tai Shan on his final full day at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, February 3, 2010.

Since 2007, Tai Shan has lived on his own at the zoo, because cubs leave their mothers at about 2 years of age and fathers play no role in cub rearing. All these years as an ABC "American Born Chinese" Panda he must be quite used to American language than his own ethnic Chinese in National Zoo DC. and hopefully when he returns to China he could catch up fast coping with the language and weather. Prior leaving his birth place in National Zoo before heading towards China view the heartbroken people in Washington DC and their final farewell words posted by fellow blogger, Pacific Islander. Get ready some tissue papers to stand by for a tearjerker.

Tai Shan left D.C. for China on February 4, 2010 (on the same flight as Mei Lan from Zoo Atlanta). His new home is the Bifengxia Panda Base, in Ya'an, Sichuan. If he is a human being would be a very good classic example of a "Bananaz Man", yellow from the outside but speaks and thinks like an American.  Wanna know more about pandas and how it sounds as newborn, 3-month-old and adult click HERE.

However another unofficial version is the Chinese government is worried sick that being alone in DC for far too long Tai Shan may mixed with the wrong company and totally forgotten his roots and becomes too Americanized, that is the reason why he needs to get back to China asap. A picture paints a thousand words..

Sigh, pandas are getting lesser and lesser day by day...

Tai Shan is 5 years old now. I wonder how old is he in panda age? I guess Tai Shan will have to learn a new lifestyle when he arrives at his new home in China. He is such a celebrity and he has left many US fans broken hearted.

Kelvin ക According to the World Conservation Union's (IUCN's) Red List of Threatened Animals, there are about 1,600 left in the wild. More than 160 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the world, mostly in China.

Autumn Belle @ KDP കa Panda can live from 10-20 years in the wild and 20-35 in a zoo or any captivity. Tai Shan is considered an adult.

I always wonder what's the fascination is about on Panda bears. Whenever China want to "tarik" relation they give you Panda bears.

I vaguely recall that they (china) has also given, don't know which part of Aussie, couple of pandas. And my goodness, that place even got built for couple of million dollars just for 2 pandas to roam!

I think spending taxpayers' money (for bears) is a bit excessive lah.

I watched a tape about this particular panda, it is a tape from public library, my son likes pandas and thus we enjoy watching this cub grow until one year old in the national zoo..

beautiful post!
Happy Tuesday!

[SK] said...

haha, i just love the last comment from the chinese officials.. mixed too much with another group and forgotten his root.. well, why not just let Tai Shan happily remain in where he is born?? who knows if he can adapt to a new place in China??

you can relate this to yourself huh?? hehe, i mean, a banana~~ :p

HappySurfer said...

Cute! In China, they have even put up an ad inviting applications for the post of a bilingual tutor to coach the sanctuary keepers who are caring for Tai Shan. They are also slowly converting his food to those of the local environment's. In the US, he has been fed biscuits but in China biscuits are not part of the diet. I wonder how he's coping.

The video on PandaB's blog made me well up with tears. So touching.

I hope Tai Shan's able to contribute to his (endangered) species.

Thanks for sharing.

[SK] ക yeah lo why wanna up root a poor ABC Panda to China after 5 years. Political reason.

HappySurfer ക Oh really! Tai Shan being fed with biscuits as well. Now they need to learn American to take care of Tai Shan *sigh*. They should have thought about it before uprooting him from DC. The video is a tearjerker indeed. TQ

CH Voon ക cant think of anything new to blog about CNY still thinking ..hehe TQ

Foongpc ക Hi MBC Panda lol..the pandas are just as cute..errrrr as your avatar not you haha..TQ
