இ TWO in ONE..

歪 wāi ~ This word alone in Chinese stands for 'Crooked or Askew'. It is a combination of two words placed one on top of each other with [not] 不bù  + [straight] 正zhèng  thus the word ~ 歪 wāi [crooked]. There is a saying in Chinese 上梁不正下梁歪 shàng liáng bù zhèng xià liáng wāi literally means "when the top is not straight the bottom will become crooked". This is more inclined to negativity, often applied to a lousy head of a family, bad administrative corporation or to a country with rotten corrupted top guns.

Saw this word while watching "Justice Pao" on TV2 where the prisoners were wearing this word 囚 qiú meaning [prisoner] on their clothes. This word 囗 wéi [enclosure] has two meaning one of the most common is mouth. When 囗wéi  [enclosed] the 人rén [people] they are putting the person behind bars. Wow what a combination!

ok ok, let me give you two examples:

不 (not) + 好 (good) = 孬 (bad)
不 (not) + 大 (big) = 奀 (small)

Unknown said...

I have a long way to go in learning the Chinese language. Practice!practice! practice! Just baby steps.

HappySurfer said...

Ooh, you've covered that word. Thanks.

Even this word has its own meaning: 好

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Cloudia இ learning bit by bit..love your 'fish'.

[SK] இ tQ bro so the bad is 孬huài that's interesting but eeerrrr sorry the other word "奀 (small)" cant compute in MDBG dictionary which says[Not in dictionary]woh? Thought small is 小xiǎo? You're pulling my leg or peeling my skin or testing bananaz izzit? haha..You're serious bro?

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Keats இ you slow slow come one word at a time..by a year we would learn more than few hundred words :)

HappySurfer இ Yo! Girls are always Good according to the combination of 女nǚ (girl) + 子zǐ (child) = 女子hǎo (good) but on other hand could turn villain when the little girl grows up if not taken care of to be 奸jiān wicked, cunning or crafty haha..~;)

It's amazing that Chinese characters can be quite expressive. Like the word prisoner. The characters really depict as if one's imprisoned with the boxed up square with another character in it.

[SK] said...

hehe, 奀 is actually not a standard mandarin work, but a cantonese word pronounced as "ngan1".. you just google this word and it really exists.. :)

foongpc said...

Love this post! It's really interesting that the Chinese characters can combine to form another character.

Viviana said...

Interesting photo and interesting thought you shared in your blog though I don't really understand Mandarin.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Mei Teng இ While watching Justice Poa this interesting word 囚 caught my attention and my soul mate who is a mango "Chinese educated" explained the meaning to me.

[SK] இ Googled and found 奀ngan1[1] skinny; puny [2] small (quantity); meagre (salary). tQ

foongpc இ learning bit by bit day by day..

Viviana இ tQ for dropping by and your comments hope we as Bananaz can have fun learning Chinese..hehe

HeLLo Bananaz,

Interesting lesson. Is the building crooked / skewed or was it just a camera trick? I wonder.

The second word "prisoner", to come to think about it, the first letter looks like a box, and the second looks like a man. so basically a prisoner is putting a person in a box. Am i right?

HAve a nice day BananaZ. I have put your link in my blog. "Da Blogs".

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

willie a.k.a reptoz இ building is truly crooked sorry cant remember where is the place got it through an email. Yeah putting a person in the box is putting him/her in jail. tQ for the link.

Happy Blogging!:)

Faisal Admar said...

hehe i like the prisoner. didn't know it's like that!

thanks for sharing =)

TG said...

This is totally my topic and that's how I remember traditional Chinese characters :)

For example cage 籠 is bamboo above dragon. The dragon itself 龍 is made of 3 characters, namely "standing", "moon" and "dragon". So for Chinese, a dragon stands in the moon. It's a pity, that many simplified characters lost the original history like the simplified dragon 龙. Or 好 is a woman 女 with a child 子= a good thing :)

And another one I found out is also pretty cool: 不 "not". It's a pictograph of a bird flying to the sky (the top line) and never reaching it, hence "not".

I hope I can find more of such things in the future. Thanks for sharing :)

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Blue இ know this it totally like Greek to you sure to confuse. Learning languages is up to individual the more interest you have the faster you would pick up..

stevevhan இ tQ those traditional writings would be more focus on the pictures.

Faisal Admar இ me too first time to see this 'prisoner' word in TV series Justice Pao.

MKL இ Wow learning new word here about cage & dragon with its 3 composition and great meaning. That's the reason why families would love to have a boy & girl so that it's 好 to them. Oh I see the 不"not" with the bird failing to reach the top coz of the top line stopping it that's interesting. Oops a Chinese learning Chinese from a Kwailo.. that's even more interesting haha. Nice! tQ for sharing too am loving it already..

RoseBelle said...

I'm actually learning Chinese from you. Yay! The word of wisdom is so true...when the top is not straight, the bottom will become crooked.

mNhL said...

Chinese character is just so SPECIAL. I can't read chinese but I'm always impressed by the character. Thks for this post as I've learn a new word today (WAI).

Have a wonderful weekend!

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

RoseBelle இ we are all learning together and in life its forever a learning process..

mNhL இ Amazing right! Chinese words were invented during Emperor Huang Di (2697 - 2597 B.C.) who ordered his historian Can Ji to establish a writing system for China..for more details click HERE

Alice Law இ they are based mostly on pictographs which is truly amazing. Have a great weekend too.
