இ 人有三急 : URGENCY

When Bananaz was a little boy will often hear family members coming back home rushing through the front door  yelling *人有三急 rén yǒu sān jí [pinyin]; jan4 jau6 saam3 gap1 [cantonese] : lit. 'people have 3 urgency'* and heading straight to the toilet in a jiffy.  Instead of saying 'excuse me' the message was loud and clear enough for us to make way for the 100m sprinter to dash through. Living in a home where Mandarin and Chinese dialects monopolized all communication with hardly any English, Bananaz will only have to silently adapt with open ears. Knowing pretty well *人有三急 rén yǒu sān jí  : lit. 'people have 3 urgency'* means the same as to answer the call of nature.  That's cool so we have in total two kinds of urgency either a big or small call, now what about the third urgency then? At that tender age Bananaz could be too naive to question further or maybe he did ask but in vain.

This same idiom re-surfaced at college while Bananaz was waiting impatiently, mumbling and grumbling at the dining table as patience was rapidly wearing out. Just about to switch into angry mode  one of my buddies commented: "Hey! Hungry is not stated in the idiom of *人有三急 rén yǒu sān jí : lit. 'people have 3 urgency*, let me tell you what are the threes".  AHA Bingo! Bananaz was jumping in joy to have found the 3rd urgency after a lapse of time. Unconsciously the hunger instantly switched to jubilation mode. Eureka! here is the answer: 1. Urinate  2. Defecate 3. Sexual.

An amazing blogger [SK] who gave me the inspiration for this post who prefers to hold on to his big call. To find out why? Plz click HERE

However not quite as yet still not the correct or complete answer for the idiom until Bananaz googled recently. Imagine learning Chinese the hearsay way all through out life from a little boy to adolescence until adult to get to the real meaning of this idiom.  Learning is never ending.

What is so URGENT about this idiom * People Have 3 Urgency人有三急 rén yǒu sān jí * :
[ 1 ]. 内急 nèi jí lit. 'internal urgency' consist of urinate and defecate.
[ 2 ]. 性急 xìng jí lit. 'sexual urgency'.
[ 3 ]. 心急 xīn jí lit. 'heart urgency' ie impatient / hurried.

[ 1 ]. 内急 nèi jí : lit. *internal urgency* consist of urinate or defecate
That's how you would have jumped when you are holding on to answer the call of nature.

2 ]. 性急 xìng jí : lit. *sexual urgency*.
A just newly married couple on their very first wedding night who are too impatiently in love.

3 ]. 心急 xīn jí : lit. *heart urgency* ie impatient/ hurried
Another close example of 心急 xīnjí  would apply to an impatient/anxious husband pacing to and fro outside the hospital ward while his wife is delivering their first baby. CAUTION: Be careful not to view this video on a full stomach as it may cause stomach ache or ROTFL.

Banakam Bananaz!! wow, this is an interesting post, i have actually not bothered to know about what are the 3 urgency, because i have always assumed that it's about and only about answering the call of nature big or small.. :D

[SK] said...

cool, you dig out my posts which is like 1.5 years ago?? hahaha, no wonder i find that photo kind of familiar like i've seen that before.. so does that post inspired you to write this, and yet you have used 1.5 years to do your research before you finally have the answer to 人有三急??

[SK] said...

thank you so much for sharing, now i shall remember all three already.. and the clips, haha!! you are cool man, Banakam!!

wenn said...

haha..hilarious videos..

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

SK இ Banakam haha. Yeah you provoke the Bananaz's antennae to search for more tQ. Oh digging this post of yours was a challenge as all the titles are in Chinese alamak Bananaz got a problem. So one by one post by post month by month until I reached year 2008 and said it can't be that far away. Bananaz will never give up without finding what he wants and quite rare to throw in the towel. Somehow saw a teeny-weeny window at your far top left ah.."search" button. Hit 'shit' nothing and then 'toilet' voila..haha. Hope you are OK after watching the video. Sweet Mango had stomach ache and Bananaz got tears in the eyes. Once again tQ for the inspiration.

Wenn இ Glad you enjoy the videos. Happy Sunday.

MEcoy said...

well i think im very much guilty of internal urgency' and heart urgency haha
well the first one is given haha it's a necessity after all
hmm the second one well i just don't have much patience
haha

That last video had me HOWLING, partly because of the situation, but mostly thanks to the commentary, the speaker's expressions and the sheer joy of language.

I've heard about the four Ps of marketing, but this is the three Ps of human behaviour, pee&poop, procreate and patient-not. :D

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

SK இ Yeah took Banannaz more than a year coz the MDBG dictionary only translate the Chinese word for word and not the idiom. Later I tried it on google with the full Chinese idiom yes it works but all in Chinese, susahlingam again and just left it there over the years and recently did the same thing on google just to check the Chinese words for confirmation sometimes not 100% sure with pinyin. Wow guess what I found, a small word in italic next to the subject "translate". Not a great translation but it definitely help a lot. Therefore it took 1.5 years to understand how the way through trial and error haha.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

MEcoy இ Oh 2nd urgency huh..you do have lots of burning desire. plz don't over burn haha.

Rurousha இ Whoa great brilliant idea on the 3 Ps of human behaviour. Love it. tQ

Banakam Bananaz!!!

Wakakakaka.....the last video was my language lah! I always curse the lady drivers who reversed and I would not hesitate to stare at them as I passed them. They would cringe in deep embarrassment at their seat. LOL

Twilight Man said...

You are amazing to share the findings of the word urgency. It certainly opened my eyes up. These days I dare not hold up as I worry of getting urine infections again and again... Pain lah!

Connie said...

It is interesting you didn't find out what this meant until you were an adult. I guess it's good that we are always learning.

lina said...

I learnt a lot of new things and a new idiom today from Bananaz. ^^

suituapui said...

Slow and steady wins the race. Biar lambat, asal selamat! In Hokkien we say, "Bay kua khee see!!!" (Wanna rush to die!)

suituapui said...

We also have: Ai pang sai char choi jamban! Wanna shit then look for toilet - something that is not good. Always be prepared - always save for a a rainy day.

Hayley said...

Oic.. So it's all about the 3 urgency.. Hehe..

The last video, I watched over and over, can't help laughing!! xD

I search for Banakam, I get this,

"यह शब्द (बानकाम) अभी हमारे डाटाबेस मे नही है । संभावित शब्द : बनाम का मतलब निचे है".

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Twilight Man இ Bro give chance lah to slow drivers Bananaz also quite slow.

lina இ Glad you picked up new things each time you slip by haha.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

suituapui இ Wah your Hokkien very chim..yalor got people say that before bay kua khee see. Slow & steady but not too slow nanti lau sai baru tahu haha

Hayley இ Hope nothing happened to your stomach after all the laughter. Actually not laughing at the auntie's driving but at what the guy behind the wheel said.

reana claire இ Sorry not my voice lar search from YouTube one. Yeah your girl wouel probably park like that with the 'P' sign haha. Give another few months she fly like Michael Schumacher and another year like Sebastian Vettel

khengsiong said...

oh... I also don't know what the 3 urgency were, until now, LOL...

khengsiong said...

BTW, you must have started learning yoga when you were a kid?

yvonne said...

LOL! Bananaz made some research on this idiom, huh? I never bothered to find out and it's good that bananaz share it here.

I thought this idiom is used mainly for pee & poo~ and I was raised in a Hokkien speaking home, seldom use "人有三急" until I went to uni and mixed with variety of housemates :D

MiChi said...

Therefore there are rapist cause by the sexual urgency? bwahahahaha....

I always tell my students to be curious, yet, I take thing for granted and never bother to find out the meaning of this idiom... shame on me.

Yannie said...

I didn't know about the 3 urgency until I read your post.

Now only I know the differences of each urgency.

But, I seldom have the second urgency one, I think the second urgency only apply to men, huh!

foongpc said...

Oh! I'm not even familiar with the 3 urgencies hahaha!! Thanks for sharing : D

foongpc said...

Hahaha!! I remember that third video!! So funny almost died laughing the last time! : D

LifeRamblings said...

the last video really cracked me up. i can't stop laughing.

LifeRamblings said...

the auntie is probably learning how to reverse the Lexus. haha
more power to you auntie, take your time. 'mai kin cheong.' Practice makes perfect. lol

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Small kucing இ Really? Maybe out of practice as all the time abang driving you around. Drive more then.

bluedreamer27 இ Welcome back and nice to see you 'alive & kicking' again haha. Wait till you get married..haha

khengsiong இ Many not aware of it. Started early 20s godmum is my yoga sifu now migrated to Australia

Lrong Lim said...

Nice post... had quite a laugh thinking about my own experiences too...

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

yvonne இ Mainly Cantonese would say this idiom not Hokkien. That's what I had in mind pee & poo in early years.

MiChi இ In a way yes as the urge could be uncontrollable once sexually aroused. Certain things could be trivial and mundane so people would just ignore them, but Bananaz is the kind who's always looking for 'trouble'. haha. tQ for dropping by.

Yan இ Like my comment to yvonne Hokkien rarely say this especially Northern region more towards Cantonese. Agree men more prone to the 2nd urgency.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

foongpc இ Not surprised for those 'true' bananaz not to know the 3 urgency or not even heard about it. We are not laughing at the auntie but the way he commented.

LifeRamblings இ Not only auntie drives that poorly Bananaz sometimes need to reverse & forward a few times when driving sweet mango's new car. Reason being the back of the car is high up and the head rest is so big almost block the whole back view. First time Bananaz was in a rush picking the best videos so nothing happened, but second time when I have chosen it and settle down to watch tears even come with the lolz

Lrong Lim இ You too? We Norhern people will say this if someone's parking is not good and up to standard..lesen kopi. haha

London Caller said...

Ha ha... but sometimes I cannot understand how girls can 救火?
They don't have hosepipes like us men do.

Leovi said...

Yes, certainly, that also happens in my house, when we all need the toilet urgently and she opened the door, all to run.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ Can! They can shoot lah

Leovi இ So the one who ran fattest gets the toilet haha

Leovi said...

Certainly the first two are totally unpostponable emergency, the third suffered sexual abstinence ... ...

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Leovi இ Answering to the call of nature is beyond our control

London Caller said...

Ha ha... I know!
Not shoot lah.

They can sprinkle.
Like the fire sprinkle in the ceiling.
Now it makes sense why we say 救火!!

Ha ha Chinese people very clever one lah.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ Very imaginative mind keep sprinkling haha

eastcoastlife said...

Oh my, the last video is hilarious.

The reason I don't want to learn driving is to avoid getting cursed by male drivers. :P

HappySurfer said...

The third urgency is a surprise to me. Thanks for the lesson.

The videos are hilarious. Thanks for sharing them.

HappySurfer said...

Btw, the last video.. if not for lady-drivers, how else would men-drivers have the chance to poke fun at the ladies?! Entertainment value there, FOC. LOL

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

EastCoastLife இ Think its just an assumption of a woman driver how clear it was a lady and not a man?

HappySurfer இ Anyone can be a slow driver not necessary only ladies. The fun is not laughing at the driver but how the comments were conveyed and spoken in the way most probably we would be speaking as well.

London Caller said...

Ha ha "imaginative" is another polite way to say I'm "kuning" right?

OK, I can direct porns next time lah.
Aiya I am telling you sex sells very good one.
You go to Amsterdam you know.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

London Caller இ Yeah been to Amsterdam seen quite a lots of window display.

Leovi இ Replace sex with eating urge? Hungry man is an angry man so its urgent.

Leovi said...

Ha ha ha, funny dancing video. The worst thing is to defecate, because the movement is worse.

Happy walker said...

haha, nice explanation about 3 Urgency.. well, now i have number 2 liao.. gg leh~

Lee said...

Hi Bananaz, ha ha, love this posting...and yes, that's life with it's many 'urgencies'.
I always admire people who speak Mandarin. Where I live, there are so many variations of Mandarin being spoken from the China immigrants....Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western China.
But I love the Shanghainese Mandarin, especially when spoken by a sexy lady.

Oh ya, I have been caught by surprise many times here when orang putehs address or talk to me in perfect, fluent mandarin. China employs lots if Canadian teachers to teach English in China. And often some young Chinese arriving here speak English with a Canadian accent too.

Ha ha ha, love your video. Love your sense of humour too.
Have a nice day.
Lee.
ps, your eyes now back to normal?

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Leovi இ Peeing is so easy to resolved especially for men but not defecate during emergency.

Mr Lonely இ Oh no sudah gian already haha.

Autumn Belle இ Wow now you raised the bar to 3 birds and in future multiple birds, lolz

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Meitzeu இ Hi tQ for dropping by

Uncle Lee இ Hi Lee slangs are every where even our dialects and BM are so different from Kelantan, Trengganu etc. Oh I see sexy lady speaks sexy Shanghainese Mandarin, ok noted. Hope you didn't fall off your chair while viewing the videos. Eyes getting better kamsia.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Yee Ling இ To be on a safer side the disposable diaper sure is pretty handy.

Leovi said...

Nice, I like the song.

HappySurfer said...

Hello Bananaz! Good sunny Fri morning!

Drove all the way to Citibank only to be told by the security personnel sitting smack in front of the sliding glass door that 'Hari ini hari cuti'. I asked what cuti? He said 'Hari Wilayah', Aiyoh kadawulei! Tsk on my part!

HappySurfer said...

Are you off too? Lucky you!
Have a wonderful long w/e ahead.

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

Leovi இ Yeah Sir Cliff is going strong at 70+

HappySurfer இ Oh gee 'white white walk' to Citibank. You are on field work and not a desk job. Bananaz works half a day only every day ie 12 hrs from 9.00am to 9.00pm for 365 days haha. Bananaz is on remote working from SOHO. Have a great weekend too.

lena said...

i cant stop laughing at the car parking video..she might be a new kid on the road..so sometimes we just got to be patient :D

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...

lena இ Great term 'NKOTR' haha. Its a pity the second video not available anymore which will make you ROTFL.

Koh Kian Fai said...

so . . . Bananaz boss know how to dance the 内急舞? :P

Koh Kian Fai said...

ahaha, it reminds me of my incident when I was kid, I say I need to pee when my mum was driving, then I kena pass a plastic bag and tell me to pee in there > . < at the end I did it lo . . . :x shhh

இ Baŋäŋaz இ said...
